Get the Crowd Together, Again...

An October 2006 trip to Myrtle Beach by Shoaf_Family

Multi-family visit to North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Fishing, shopping, lounging about, and dining.

Room looked very nice; spacious (rooms ending in -17 are larger). Alas, cleanliness was lacking: the tile floor was very grimy, left our feet dirty if we were barefoot. That was nothing compared to the "palmetto bugs" (a.k.a. cockroaches) in the room. We killed four over a 7-night stay. To their credit, the staff did try to help, but we declined both spraying (no pesticides wanted around my 16-month-old) and a move to another room (no guarantee we wouldn't have them there, too). Staff was apologetic and gave us a fruit basket for our trouble. Still, don't know that I would ever be comfortable returning. We expect to get some laughs out of "remember whens," and I figure they jumped right on the problem after our departure.

Hard Rock CaféBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Hard Rock Cafe"

Loud music, great food. A standard in tourism destinations, Hard Rock lives up to its reputation. Despite the size of the restaurant and the volume of the music, Hock Rock is oddly intimate. We went there to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary, because it was the first restaurant at which we shared a meal when we met ten years ago.

(Try the Grilled Chicken with Twisted Mac & Cheese—a spicy turn on an old favorite.)

Ripley's AquariumBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Must-see! Tickets are just under $20 for adults, not sure about hand-stamping for readmission. Not the largest aquarium by any means, but one of the most accessible and family-friendly. Feedings/shows are on a regular schedule, and worth a pause in your tour to listen and observe. Oh, and be sure to stop by the horseshoe crab and ray pools. (Watch for splashing!) Some beautiful exhibits of sea creatures we otherwise would not have the pleasure of seeing, and plenty of room for visitors (located at Broadway at the Beach).

Attraction | "Scandia House at Barefoot Landing"

Pleasant little shop with a good variety of gift items. Reasonably priced, for the beauty of the pieces. Purchased burgundy and gold blown glass bird for $20 (fits in the palm of my hand) as a birthday gift. Staff was friendly; welcomed out-of-state checks.

Apache Family Campground & PierBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Apache Pier"

Part of the Apache Family Campground, the pier and neighboring surf offer excellent fishing spots. Family members caught blues and pompano. The pier is also great to walk as a spectator—we've seen sharks, porpoises, huge schools of jellyfish, skates, and plenty of fish (of course!).
