Overview

Quote:
Space -- the final frontier? Well, maybe. The Cosmosphere in Hutchinson lets you explore how some of earth's inhabitants have gotten to that final frontier. It's not Star Trek, it's better. We enjoyed the IMAX theater presentation on Egypt and the pyramids. The laser light show was spectacular.

Quick Tips:

If you attend the four shows presented by the Cosmosphere, space them out with a trip to the museum between two of them. If you do all four shows in a row, as we did, you may find yourself snoozing through one of them.

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking is the best (and only) way to get around in the Cosmosphere.

The Cosmosphere provides a food court at which fast food items may be purchased. It was handy and inexpensive and served food that is normally found at quick shops, etc.

The Cosmosphere provides an interesting museum containing quite a number of space displays. The actual capsules seemed to be more focused on Soviet craft, but there were several displays depicting US ventures also. The lighting in the museum was interesting but was not conducive to taking photographs. The displays were varied and provide interesting aspects for both children and adults.

There were three or four options for the theater presentation. We saw the 'Mysteries of Egypt.' Alternative presentations included something on dolphins and one other I don't remember. IMAX theaters are always an awesome experience and this was no exception. An interesting aspect of this particular IMAX theater is that the projection room is fully visible to the public. I've never seen such huge reels of film before. While we were waiting for our presentation to begin we were able to observe how the film is changed and other mysterious things that go on in the projection room -- something usually hidden from view.

The laser light show we saw was fascinating and over all too quickly. It was a well thought out presentation of light and sound, captivating for all, from the very young to the very old.

Dr. Goddard's Lab was a fascinating demonstration of rocketry and a bit of a history lesson. There were explosions (controlled) and flying rockets to keep the kids interested and enough science to keep adults at rapt attention.

Besides being a wonderful place to experience the technology of space travel, the Cosmosphere also appeals to the aesthetic nature of humans by placing objects d'art around their facility. Outside the planetarium was an interesting piece that I took a couple of photos of.
