Galway Irelend

An August 2000 trip to Galway by finzup

I travelled to Galway, Ireland in September 2000 on a business trip. I found the country to be very beautiful, and the people to be very friendly. Public transportation is very easy and there are tour buses and trains that are very inexpensive.

Overview

Cliffs of Moher was the most memorable moment. It was absolutely breathtaking. It was a bit windy there, you may need a jacket. Also make sure you wear comfortable shoes.

Quick Tips:

Make sure you drink a pint of guiness at one of the many fabulous pubs in galway!

Best Way To Get Around:

Taxis were everywhere and fairly inexpensive. They had train service from Eyre square to points all over ireland. Bus tours were available too, for a reasonable cost.

Very nice little place in the "downtown" area of galway. Within walking distance to many shops, pubs, etc. Good value for the money, $45 US per night (single room, rate dependent on conversion rate of $). Brennans Yard Hotel has 45 beautifully appointed en-suite bedrooms. Each room is individually furnished with antique pine furniture, providing a unique accommodation experience. The single size room was a good size for one person. The room had a hairdryer, phone, TV with cable, and a coffee machine. Nice pub at the hotel too. Breakfast was included in the room rate.

Tigh Neachtain
This is a century old family run business right at the heart of the medieval quarter of Galway. The pub is housed in the building which used to be the townhouse of famous politician and animal rights activist Richard Martin, known as Humanity Dick, who lived there in the last century. The bar itself holds a long and varied history, particularly as one of the main homes of traditional Irish music in the West.
Tigh Neachtain's is a traditional irish pub. Grab a guiness and a chair and relax. Some say it's the "best guiness in Galway".. I might agree!
Here, you'll find all sorts of people from musicians to poets to tourists. Everyone was very friendly and I visited this pub everyday of my visit to galway!
I probably spelled the name wrong, and I can't even pronounce it. I just referred to it as "the blue pub" since it's painted blue outside. You can't miss it!

Attraction

Cliffs of Moher
This was an all day bus tour, for an incredible $12. Started off in Galway, went through the countryside. Saw some old castles.

Stopped off at Alwee Caves, where you could go on an optional ($5) tour of really cool caves. Continued on to a town on the coast, where we had lunch (not included, but inexpensive). There were several resturants and shops there. Continued on to the cliffs of Moher. Absolutely breathtaking. Beautiful spot for pictures. We had about an hour to wander around. Then back to the bus. The bus stopped off at several other locations for pictures. Got back into Galway around 5pm, just in time to go to the pub!
