Great restaurants and shopping.
Waterfire in the summer.

if you're staying downtown, book your hotel early, as they tend to fill up. Some hotels in the downtown area that are in a good location:
Westin
Biltmore

Best Way To Get Around:

In the city, there are trolleys that operate that cost only .50. The regular bus is .25 no matter what route or where you go. Downtown, it's a good idea to walk. The area is safe, and there's lots to see on foot.

Pub History Lavin's originally opened in the town of Swinford in county Mayo on the wind swept west coast of Ireland in the year 1889. There it stood unchanged until 1998 when it began its journey to Providence. Now this wonderful example of a traditional shop bar is centerstage in Rí~Rá Providence. Throughout the entire pub you will find items of antiquity and interest. The iron pillars at the entrance to the pub, for example, were part of the original steam driven machinery from the cotton mills in Drogheda, County Louth. They originate from the early 1800's. The parlor bar, c. 1850, was recovered from a Georgian property in Dublin that was gutted by fire in 1995. O...Read More

Vinny T's of Boston

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Vinny Testa's"

Quote:
Vinny Testas serves up family style Italian food. And serve it up they do. Their portions are huge! All items on their menu come in two sizes. "For 1" or "for 2". However, in true Italian style of feeding you until you burst, the "for one" size feeds 2, maybe 3 people and the "for 2" size feeds 3-4 people. Vinny's has a full bar, and all meals are served with homemade focaccia bread served with a clove of roasted garlic drizzled in olive oil. Vinny's is a chain restaurant, mostly in the New England area. The only problem I noticed is that there really is no "waiting" area. One night the wait was close to two hours long and people were spilling out all over the place. The bar area is th...Read More

Oki's Japanese Steakhouse

Full Bar, full sushi bar, smoking allowed at the bar, reservations accepted. At Oki's you're seated at a hibachi at a table for 8 people. If you dont have 8 friends, don't worry, they seat you with other people. Besides a great dining experience, Oki's is also a great show. Prices are moderate, but the dinner price includes much more than the actual dinner. Here, I'll take you through a typical dining experience at Oki's. When you sit down, you meet and talk to the other people you're going to be dining with. Smoking is allowed, but sometimes the people you're sitting with complain, so it's best to speak with the hostess in advance to request a "smoking" or a "non-smoking" ta...Read More

Myself and two guests dined at Mainelli's (pronounced my-an-elli's) and found it to be a great dining experience Traditional Italian food, cooked perfectly is what's on the menu. They've got quite an extensive menu ranging from appetizers to desserts and espresso. They have a full bar, smoking section, parking lot, and very reasonable prices. They do take reservations, but we didn't need any on a Sunday afternoon. Dinner's we tried: Veal parmesan: Fabulous. It was a huge portion of veal, and an even bigger portion of pasta served with it. Pasta choices included macaroni (ziti), angel hair, or linguini. The sauce was a bit sweet, but ...Read More

WaterFire

Attraction

On certain weekend nights in the spring/summer/fall, they have what's called "WaterFire" They light torches in the water, and play eerie music. The water is a small river that extends from the Providence Place Mall down to Hemenways resaurant. We have gondola rides in the river as well. Many restaurants and bars along the waterfire where you can relax with a cocktail. Here's the actual description... in case I didn't describe it well enough :) WaterFire Providence® , the award-winning sculpture by Barnaby Evans installed on the three rivers of downtown Providence, has been praised by Rhode Island residents and international visitors alike as a powerful work of art and a...Read More

Lets see.. what to say about a Mall. Basically, Providence Place mall doesn't differ from most malls. It's more of an upscale mall, with upscale prices. There are 3 floors to the mall, as well as a huge, but very poorly designed parking garage. Here's a (hopefully) fairly comprehensive list of the stores in the mall. For more info and for a better list of stores, I'd go to their website www.providenceplace.com The big stores are Lord & Taylors, Filenes, Nordstroms, Borders Bookstore, Bed & Bath & Beyond, and Old Navy. For clothing stores include The Gap, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, Guess, Bebe, Charlotte Russe, Abercrombie & Fitch, Delia's, Eddie Bauer, Sketcher...Read More

Thayer Street

Attraction

Quote:
Right in the middle of Brown University and the RISD (RI School of Design) campuses, there are lots of cool/eclectic shops on Thayer Street. You can find clothes, music, vintage clothes, body piercing etc. Pretty much anything! There are many good restaurants here too.. Andrea's for greek food, Montana for Texmex, or try Spikes for some really good hotdogs. They've just opened a new restaurant, Johnny Rockets which is really neat. It's a 50's style burger joint. The employees wear those paper hats, and you can get a vanilla coke, or a really good milkshake to go along with your burger! There's also a movie theater (The Avon), which shows artsy type films, and several good bookstor...Read More
