Lancaster is a great hub for visiting PA Dutch country and taking in the charms of a slower-paced Central Pennsylvania historic town. (Incidentally, did you know that the PA Dutch are not Dutch, but of German heritage? Somewhere down the line the word "deutsch" got mangled). But aside from all that stuff, a weekend visitor can take advantage of museums, parks, lovely historic downtown neighborhoods, markets, and a slowly blossoming arts & culture community. Of course, there are also many opportunities to observe old order Amish and Mennonite communities in the countryside of Lancaster County -- and even in the city.Quick Tips: Lancaster has its very own Amtrak station (a old-st...Read More

Carr's Restaurant is curious. Nestled in cobblestoned Grant Street which frames the Central Market (Lancaster's old farmers market), the restaurant is unassuming. The menu posted quietly outside offers an unusual twist-- upon reading, one is inclined to wonder what in tarnation something like this is doing here. A martini - sake - sushi bar, with eclectic sandwiches for the lunch hour? And there's and upstairs and a down: Carr's downstairs looks like an old-school ornate + stuffy business lunch kind of place with its own menu, while the upstairs cafe (which is actually street level and a separate space) touts a clean, minimalist Asian decor, with fresh clips of bamboo on table vases. On the cafe...Read More

The Fulton Opera House is a grand Victorian theatre, which has the honorable distinction of being one of the few national historic landmark theatres in the U.S. Refurbished in the mid-90s, it has classic seating arrangements, including a mezzanine which has fantastic views of the stage and elegant birds-eye box seats, as well as upper gallery seating. The environment has an old-fashioned elegant and intimate feel, which adds dimension to theatre-going: dramatic pillars, marble staircases, high-ceilinged foyers and ornate goldleafed ceilings. The Fulton hosts theatrical productions including Actors Company of Pennsylvania (Actor's Equity Association productions), musical performances by Lancaster Sy...Read More

Zoetropolis

Quote:
Zoetropolis is a gutted rowhouse turned hip theatre with a weekly rotation of current independent and foreign films. Aside from being one of the only places in the area to see this genre of film, the Zoe's ambiance is well-executed for moviegoers, with a variety of seating arrangements including oversized sofas and cafe tables in the back, and for those who prefer the tried-and-true, at least a dozen rows of traditional theatre seating in the front. The screen is medium-sized, but because the theatre is small, every seat in the house is a good one. The theatre is also used for live music performances and has pre-showtime in-house coffee bar which serves gourmet treats to enjoy during the film. To ...Read More

Long's Park Summer Music Series

www.longspark.org A bit reminiscent of Boston's Hatch Shell events in the summer, The Ampitheatre at Long's Park hosts a great outdoor summer concert series each year with an eclectic performance schedule. Most events start around dusk at 7:30pm on Sunday evenings. The grounds at Long's Park --about 70 acres-- off of Route 30 have lots of wide open green lawns, paths, pavilions, tennis courts, a natural pond, and places for barbecuing. (There's also a mini-zoo tucked in there somewhere, as I recall). The stage faces a gently sloping lawn abutted by trees, and if you sit in the middle, the sound is great for being outdoors. ...Read More

Pennsylvania College of Art & Design

Attraction | "PA School of Art & Design"

Quote:
PSA&D, an art college in downtown Lancaster has a large, first floor space with rotating exhibits about every other month. The gallery primarily shows students, local artists and/or juried exhibitions, with several special exhibits of national or international artists through-out the year. More than occasionally a show will be anemic, but for the most part, its usually interesting enough to pop in to see what people are up to. The school also has a good workshop and continuing education program, so something is always going on.

The Demuth Foundation includes the restored house and garden of Charles Demuth as well as his family's next-door store, Demuth Tobacco Shop -- which is the oldest tobacco shop in the nation, founded in 1770 -- still in operation. The painter Charles Demuth, one of Lancaster's most famous natives, is said to have brought the Cubist influence to the U.S. as well as perhaps the very initial hints of pop art, evidenced by his 1928 work, "The Figure 5 in Gold" (whose home is The Met). What is most striking is the clear influence of the Lancaster city landscape on the artist's work -- grain elevators, city life, city buildings etc. One of Demuth's most well-known paintings is "My Egypt." Though the ...Read More
