First Night on the Mountain for a city kid

An April 2001 trip to Scaly Mountain by sasha1

First Night on the Mountain for a city kid

Overview

Quote:
The sun goes down quickly in the mountains. We sit buzzed by bumble bees. Territorial hummingbirds aggressively chase off interlopers. These are little bright armored warriors who literally bump their opponents in jousting matches over sugar water. Silent night? The air Fills with birds answering each other's calls and strident cicadas in surround-a-sound. By ten darkness is complete and we "city dwellers" look up at an alien sky flooded white with stars. The rare airplane passing overhead and assures us this is the same sky as "back home" but it seems improbable. Imagination meets darkness where acorns fall and dogs bark warning telegrams. We hear rain and semi-awake realize it's the ...Read More

Scaly is located 7 miles between Dillard, Georgia and Highlands, North Carolina. Head south for dinner at the Dillard House. Well known by both locals and tourists, you are in for a home-style Southern cooking feast. Aside from home smoked meats which fill the air on a chilly morning you will have plenty of local veggies from ocra and tomatoes to cabbage. Tastes fresh off the farm and it is.

Home or family-style dining means a large selection of basic stick to your ribs food and plenty of it in a relaxed atmosphere. You won't go away hungry or disappointed.

Heading North from Dillard toward Franklin, North Carolina you will see a little road-side dairy about 1/2 mile north of the stop light...don't worry- there's only one stop light. STOP-especially if it's a hot day. Located on the edge of the Tennesettee River is the chance to have a great ice cream cone and wander down to the river to sit at the picnic benches. Although there are other dairy products (all fresh you can see the milking machines) just grabbing a hand-packed cone and spending a little while by the river reminds you that you are there to relax and have fun. My recommendation?- Black Cherry! Sometimes it's the little things that will make your trip memorable. You can get a McDonald's c...Read More

Scaly Mountain doesn't even have a stop light but it does have Don's Plumbing and Grocery. If you are looking for "small town" America you"ve just found it at Don's. A quick stop there gets you the gas you need to travel to the next stop on your travels...a little time wandering the aisles lets you know that mountain life isn't easy, even today. Plumbing, painting, electrical, fishing supplies. Emergency supplies for when your water is running more under your cabin than into your sink and Don will advise you how to fix it-if you are humble enough to ask...and are willing to listen. More hardware than food. but there's a table where you can sit back and if you are open enough to r...Read More
