Macon claims over 200,000 Yoshino cherry trees and may be the Cherry Blossom Capital of the World. I believe its annual Cherry Blossom Festival began in 1983. There were many events scheduled for 2001 including a golf tournament. By the time we visited Macon for the festival, many of the trees had lost their blooms, and we certainly didn't see that many trees in our area, but there were enough blooms in evidence for us to enjoy. When we entered the city park where the signs had led us, my son said that it must not take much to entertain people in Macon, but he retracted his words after we enjoyed ourselves spending time together in a family atmosphere where dogs and children were truly welcome. There were rides on pirate ships, food, live entertainers, exhibits, and the real highlight: a wonderful assemblage of numerous mint-condition Fords dating back as far as the 1920's. There were sky divers landing within a few yards of us and hot air balloons. We were completely satisfied with our choice to give Macon a try and plan to visit that city again to explore some of its other sights.

Best Way To Get Around:
Macon is a relatively easy drive on the interstates from either Atlanta or Savannah and seems worth the effort to spend a day. I would not want to be without a car. There are some nice places for walking after parking.
