Cozy Copenhagen

Overview

Prior to embarking on a Baltic cruise, we spent several days in Copenhagen, crisscrossing the city on foot to see the sites. In Denmark's largest city, architecture ranges from fine Renaissance structures to charming, gabled townhouses. We visited Amalienborg and Christiansborg Palaces, along with the picturesque Rosenborg Slot. Other favorites were the Little Mermaid, Nyhavn, and Stroget Street.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Copenhagen is a compact city, easily accessible by walking. Strategically placed parks make walking from place to place a pleasant experience.

Ibsens Hotel is a 3-star property. Our room was small, but cozy. The best part about the Ibsens, for us, was the staff who patiently answered questions and outlined maps for our daily trek around the city. Recommendations were made for routes that would take us through parks on our way to a particular site. The essence of Danish spirit is "hygge", which means warmth, hospitality, and coziness. We found "hygge" at the Ibsens Hotel.

We enjoyed so much the Rosenborg Slot and accompanying gardens, that we returned there three times during our visit to Copenhagen. Rosenborg Slot was built in the 1600's as a summer residence. It has been called "a playful version of a fortress". Surrounding parkland has beautiful flowers, shrubbery, and trees for those wanting striking photographs.

Nyhavn (New Harbor) was built over 300 years ago. Hans Christian Anderson lived here. A lively place, we had one of our most expensive meals here, but it was sure good. Bring a camera to Nyhavn. It's a colorful sight to see.

The Little Mermaid is the famous emblem of Copenhagen. Unveiled in 1913, the Little Mermaid was inspired by Hans Chrisian Anderson's character who left the sea after falling in love with a prince.
