12 Hours in Miami

Overview

Quote:
A1A Beachfront Avenue Vanilla Ice sang about it. Will Smith raps about it. It's gotta be the party street to beat all streets, right? It's definitely CRAZY and provided us with tons of entertainment without even getting out of our car! It's definitely an experience I'll remember forever! Quick Tips: To save , fly into Miami and rent a car (or a van in our case) and make the drive to Key West. Travel agents highly recommend this, as do I. The drive is gorgeous, and there are lots of neat places to stop on the way! For us, finding a liquor store was quite a task. Sounds easier than it was. If you are trying to buy liquor on your way to Key West (like we were),...Read More

Not knowing much about Miami, we figured a hotel in the medical center couldn''t be too bad or in a bad neighborhood. This assumption was correct, but ONLY if you know how to get there! Apparently, there is more than one "NW 14th Street" so the directions I got from an online map program were incorrect. We ended up in a not-so-nice neighborhood at 1:30 AM in a rented minivan. Well, using our intuition, we drove the other way down 14th and found the hotel amongst the hospitals. It''s a small building compared to the large hospitals around it, but still fairly visible from the street. We drove in about 2 AM, and checked in. Even though we made our reservation on the Internet (Travelocity...Read More

Restaurant | "Cami's Seafood"

On our way back into Miami from the Keys, we wanted to stop and have one last sit down meal before going to the airport to fly home. We were just looking for a place that looked casual, affordable, and fun when we stumbled upon Cami's. The sign looked fun and inviting, and the restaurant itself looked like a Red Lobster. We walked in and since it was a Friday afternoon, there was almost nobody there. However, it was obvious that this place would probably be packed in a few hours with the Friday night family crowd. We were promptly seated and drink orders were taken. The menus consisted of well-described entrees consisting of mostly seafood, with a few non-seafood items listed. The menu a...Read More

Running on a few hours of sleep and a perfect spring day, we headed out to find the Hard Rock Cafe (we all collect things from them). The HRC is located in the Bayside Marketplace - you'll know you're there when you see the brand new huge America Airlines Arena (home of the Miami Heat) nearby. It's a gorgeous arena, surrounded by the water and marketplace. We parked in the 1200-car parking garage (~$6/hour) behind the HRC, in the center of the marketplace. There are also boat docks on the waterfront side of Bayside, if you happen to be arriving by boat. Located near downtown Miami, Bayside is a waterfront, two-level, open air mall, with retail stores such as Gap, Bath&Body Works, Victori...Read More

By the time we picked up our rental car and checked into our hotel, it was well after 1 AM, and we were very tired, but, we really wanted to see the craziness that was South Beach. So, we left the hotel, thinking we knew where we were going (all we have to do is find one of the causeways, right?!). Well, it's harder than it sounds. My recommendation is to figure it out before you go, then if your time is limited (as ours was), you won't be driving around and discovering "the real Miami" in a turquoise rented minivan!! Eventually, we made it over the McArthur Causeway, and knew from the bright lights and the awesome art deco-styled hotels and buildings that we had arrived! We turned left on...Read More

Finding a Liquor Store in Miami

Story/Tip

Sounds easy right? Miami's a big city, a lot of people go there to party, you think there would be liquor store on every other corner. No. Well, we started looking in the morning on our way to the grocery store. Sometimes there are liquor store in/around grocery stores. Nope. So, we went to lunch and asked our waiter at lunch. He said that there was a Walgreen's across the street with a liquor store in it. We walked all in and around the Walgreen's, no liquor store. We walked a couple of blocks, thinking that this was a big commercial area (we were near Bayside), and maybe we would find one. Nope. We stopped and asked someone on the street, they pointed us down the street and said it was ab...Read More
