Quote: My Family's Trip to America's Only Water Cavern.
After living only 2 hours from the caves for over 20 years, I finally decided it was time to visit. After a nice ride, well minus the kids bickering, we got into Pleasant Gap and decided that since State College wasn't to far we would go there to eat at CiCi's Pizza and then head over to Penn's Cave. After our youngest rushed us through lunch because was so excited about seeing the cave we left and arrived at Penn's Cave enterance in about 20 minutes.
Upon heading up the road we passed a fenced in area for the wildlife area that contained elk and deer. As we got to the parking area, it was not at all what I was expecting, it was much smaller than I thought it would be. We went over to the gift shop/ticket sales/cafe area and purchased tickets to go on the hour long boat tour of the cavern. After paying our for 2 adults and 2 kids, we browsed the gift shop for a few minutes and then went outside to go down to the cave. We arrived to the bottom of the hill and were faced with a huge opening filled with water and about 45 steps to go down.
Once we got to the bottom of the stairs, there were quite a few large trout to feed as we waited to board the boat. We got on the boat and headed off into the darkness of the cavern and then a light was switched on and we were seeing some of the most beautiful stalactites and stalagmites in some of the most unique designs. We learned alot about the cavern and it's history. Upon coming to the end of the cavern we were then taken out into the lake to turn around and got to see some more of the wildlife, like the elk in the lake, swans, and ducks, on the way back into the cavern we even seen a copperhead swimming along the edge. We were then taken back into the cavern and back to the docking area. Once we got off the boat we climbed back up the hill and into the gift shop. The kids eaech got a bag to take out side and pan for gems, which they found fun. If you are ever in the area I would suggest visiting the cave.
