An April 2006 trip
to Key West by KimberNicola
Quote: We had so much fun the first time, we had to go back again! Enjoy warm days, palm trees and much more!
We enjoyed it so much the first time we went back and took another couple with us. We stayed in the Truman Annex Shipyard, which is in a quaint little neighborhood that was close to Duval and Mallory Square yet had a quiet residential feel. We had a two-bedroom one bathroom unit that was nice, but not luxurious. Try Smather’s Beach for a quiet afternoon. It’s a half-mile stretch of sandy man-made beach with sand from the Bahamas. There are restrooms, concession stands, chair rentals, bike paths, picnic tables, and volleyball nets. Rick’s on Duval has Karaoke. It’s a hoot and they have good pina coladas, too. Danger Cruises has a nice sunset cruise. They serve wine, bottled beer, an appetizer plate and the crew are a good bunch of people who make it a fun time.Go to the Schooner Warf Bar for relaxation. It’s a "local’s favorite". It is on the dock so you can watch the boats come in and go out, they have great food, and they have live entertainment daily. I like to sit at my desk at the office and listen to the 12 to 5 entertainment via their live web cam.Don’t miss the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square. There may be jugglers, acrobats or fire-eaters, probably all of the above. The arts and crafts they have there are all very nice, handpainted t-shirts and jewelry are just a couple of things they have. Great fun for the entire family! If you want to snorkel and kayak try Sebago. Our cruise was especially nice because the weather was perfect and there was a small group on that day. We had lunch and drinks after we were all done with the activities. They make a great sangria, try it!
If you enjoy the unusual plan your trip for April during Conch Republic Independence Celebration, in honor of the tongue- in-cheek protest secession of the Keys from the Union on April 23rd, 1982. There are many parties, races, a parade, and a "war" against a real flagship at the end of the week. We got to see the drag races while we were there (queens, not cars – after all it is Key West!) and were thoroughly entertained. Key West is a great place to relax and have a good time! Can’t wait to return for the third time.
