An October 2005 trip to Ames by NotYourBroom

I used to live here for 2 years in graduate school and hated it. But going back for just the weekend wasn't so bad.

Hotel | "MonteBello Bed & Breakfast Inn"

This is a Mexican themed B&B. It was so unexpected and fun. When you drive up, you see a Mexican hacienda surrounded by prairies and corn fields. Each room is decorated like a different part of Mexico and the main rooms are filled with Mexican art. And the breakfast is Mexican. The owners are very nice and helpful with information about Ames. The only problem is that it is not centrally located by the bus line so you will need a car.

Hotel

This place is the most affordable in Ames and it has the best location. It is in the memorial union in the center of campus (which is probably why you are in Ames, right?). You can walk anywhere on campus from here and you can catch a bus to anywhere off campus. The rooms are small, but you can’t beat the price and location.

Restaurant

Chinese/Indonesian cuisine. The best Chinese food I've had with a great selection for vegetarians. It sounds simple, but the Lo Mein with Tofu is amazing. And the location in the middle of campus-town can't be beat.

Attraction

It’s a dollar theatre! This can’t be beat. Just wait a few months for movies to show up here and get the theatre experience cheaper than renting.
