Living it up in Lucaya

A December 2000 trip to Grand Bahama Island by Tiffnco

If you're planning a trip to the Bahamas and are grimacing at the thought of crowded Nassau, consider Grand Bahama Island - home to Freeport and the newly revamped Lucaya.

I'll have to strongly suggest a day trip to Gold Rock Beach. I've been to many beaches around the world and this was one of the most amazing beaches I've seen. You have to walk through a mangrove swamp (there is a small boardwalk) to get there. Make sure you go when the tide is going out. If it's high tide, there won't be any beach. The sand is white, the water bright blue and not one developed piece of property for miles.

Quick Tips:

If you're there on a Tuesday, have a cab take you to the local fish fry (changes locations, but always on Tuesday and the cab driver will know where to go).

Also, consider staying in or around Lucaya. There's more to see and do along with better beaches. Freeport is the business district and getting a cab can be a pain during certain times of the day.

Best Way To Get Around:

You can rent a car, which I wish we did. They're expensive at the airport - some hotels or timeshares will have their own. You can take a taxi anywhere but there are so many areas to explore if you have a car.

We had a 3-bedroom condo on the harbor. It''s an older complex but visited by colorful locals and ex-pats from the US living on boats at the yacht club. The beds are great, the showers hot and the views, although not of the beach, are nice. The best part is the staff - willing to do anything for you!
