One Month on Jeju

Overview

I was on the island of Jeju (Cheju-do), off the coast of mainland South Korea, for four weeks to work as an ESL teacher. I wanted to share some quick tips and suggestions on what to see if you are planning a trip to this beautiful and exotic destination.Quick Tips: During the summer (we were there from July 20 to August 18) it is VERY hot. This is a tropical island and the heat can be unrelenting. Most days the temperature was between 90 and 98 with high humidity. It rained about four days total, which tends to raise the humidity even more after showers for half a day, and not cool things off at all. HYDRATION IS KEY. Free bottled water dispensers are in every restaurant, store, and publ...Read More

Teddy Bear Museum

Attraction

Teddy Bear Museum Photo, Jeju Island, South Korea
Quote:
This is a museum celebrating all things teddy bears. You can see bears designed to depict Napoleon, Ghandi, and Abraham Lincoln. There are teddies showing cultures from around the world in wedding outfits.~~ Children of all ages will be delighted to see the world's smallest and most expensive stuffed bears. They have an excellent section depicting teddy bears as famous works of art, such as the "Mona Lisa" or "The Last Supper." Outside there is an "enchanted teddy bear forest." ~~ We took our students there for a field trip, and the children aged from about 8 to 15 seemed to enjoy it very much. The museum has a well-stocked and pricey gift shop, plus an indoor cafe to enjoy...Read More

Hamdeok Beach is considered by many to be one of the finest beaches on the island of Jeju. Since Jeju is a volcanic island, there are plenty of lava rocks and unusual natural formations. The beach has free parking about a block away. There are luxury hotels, restaurants, tube rentals, shower facilities, and free shelters readily available.~~ We had as our headquarters an open-air cafe/bar which provided seating, lockers, and shelter from the sun. The cafe was directly on the water, and served snacks, soft drinks, beer, and even simple hot foods like ramen and rice. Best of all, they had a snow cone machine (which meant free shaved ice without syrup--one of my favorite treats) and a freezer...Read More

Jusangjeollidae is a breathtakingly beautiful seaside cliff area where you can walk out onto observation decks and enjoy nature.

~~The park has some other very minor attractions, like an enormous seashell for photo ops. There are artisans selling paintings of the sea. But the biggest draw here is definitely the scenic views of waves crashing onto craggy rocks and the black ocean below.

~~This attraction is a good resting area perhaps after lunch or when your kids want a break from the other museums. You really only need to allow about 30 to 45 minutes here. Be sure and snap some photos at the observation area. You can also rent boats and view Jusangjeollidae from the water.

Quote:
Okay, so here's the deal. Jeju Island is known for their "horses." Rich Koreans come to Jeju, especially on their honeymoons and one of the most popular activities is horseback riding.~~A couple of things about the horseback riding. First, they are really descended from Mongolian ponies. So, these are not the big riding horses I was used to in Kentucky.~~Secondly, at least at the stable our English camp visited twice, the people running the place were extremely short-tempered and rude. I shudder to think how they treat the animals when people AREN'T around, because the horses looked pathetic and sad. It was SO very hot the day we visited, in the heat of the day, and I saw no one ...Read More

Micheon Cave

Attraction

There are several caves on the island of Jeju. The one we visited is Micheon Cave. The park has some interesting landscaping (waterfalls, fountains, etc.) and is a great spot for jogging or walking.~~This cave is a wonderful destination when the day is hot. As you descend into the cave via modern stairs, you feel the temperature drop to about 50 degrees. The cave has flora and fauna inside, along with man-made features like the giant dragon mural and altar to Buddha.~~There is a large fountain just outside the cave with alternating streams of water which erupt in patterns, similar to ones you might have seen here (e.g. Atlant's Olympic park). This is great fun for the kids, and yo...Read More

This traditional folk village is an outdoor museum which features dozens of buildings and other structures telling the historical of Korea. Everything is outside, so plan your visit on a cooler day if possible. Or do things Korean style and carry and umbrella like a parasol, which works wonders.~~Here you can see what life was like a few hundred years ago in Korea. Korean chamber pots, fireplaces, tools, and other implements are on display. You can see what it takes to carry loads of sticks the old-fashioned way or view a traditional Korean wedding scene. There is a traditional Confucian school, an herbal apothecary shop, a weaving studio, and livery.~~The village is sort of like c...Read More

Pacific Land is sort of like a ghetto Sea World of Korea. The tank for the animals and the arena itself is pretty small compared to a theme park you would find here. But the energetic lead trainer in her cool boots sort of makes up for it.Various animals perform tricks for the crowd. They have dolphins, which seemed to mainly chase beach balls and leap in the air. Apparently they have penguins, which we missed because we arrived late to the show. Boooo! Sea lions also put on an act, and their mischievous ways are a big crowd-pleaser. The best part of the show in my opinion had to be the awesome trained monkeys. I love monkeys anyway, but these could jump rope and do acrobatics. They al...Read More

E-Mart is like the Wal-Mart of Korea. If you need pretty much anything, you can jump in a cab and say E-mart. If you are on the north side of the island in Jeju City, you can even say E-mart on NO HUNG DONG and it makes it funnier.~~The store has several levels. Ground level is clothing, accessories, shoes, babies/children, jewelry, camping and swimming gear. Up the escalator you will find stationery, electronics, books, housewares/domestics, automotive, and additional check lanes. ~~Incidentally, the food court upstairs has excellent food for such a place, but the don't serve drinks. The bathroom is in the very back corner through the "food court" and the toilets are so complicat...Read More
