We really enjoyed the Virginia Beach Aquarium. It's a great value. We also enjoyed our trip aboard the Rudee Flipper boat to see some dolphins. To my surprise, we saw quite a few. But one of the more enjoyable--and certainly the cheapest -- thing to do was grab a towel, some sunscreen, and head to the beach itself.Quick Tips: There are a variety of coupon books and maps at just about every corner. The "VB Guide" seemed to have the most information about local activities, but some of the smaller books had more coupons and more detailed maps.Just about all of the local attractions and restaurants offered coupons of some kind because of the high competition for tourists, so don't be shy abou...Read More

The Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront seemed to be a hip and nice hotel. The lobby was quite striking, with an interesting, color-changing art piece on the wall that mimicked the nearby waves. We were also impressed by the rooftop area, complete with an indoor pool and bar. The highlight was an outdoor pool overlooking the ocean -- from about 22 stories up -- with an infinity edge so that it seemed to flow to the horizon. Elevator service was somewhat spotty up there, and there was some very loud, very raunchy music blaring the day we were there. Apparently it's quiet other times, but we just wanted to leave despite the incredible view.Hilton provides great rooms, chic dining, and nice...Read More

I personally had a lousy dining experience at this ice cream -- excuse me, frozen custard -- shop, but it was probably one of the nicest places in the area for a frozen treat.Kohr Brothers is conveniently located near the beach area, and it offers about a half dozen flavors of frozen custard. You can twist any two flavors together, which is unique among soft-serve ice cream joints, and add a variety of toppings.Unfortunately the staff speaks English poorly and seemed to be unfamiliar with, if not afraid of, the cash registers. I ordered one of their blended treats (like a D...Read More

Giovanni's Pizza & Pasta

Giovanni's offers nice Italian food at a reasonable price. They're centrally located, provide free parking, and we enjoyed it.The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating, but I'd recommend sitting inside near the front door. Outdoor seating was very limited and somewhat cramped, and the back of the restaurant seemed to have a different vibe than the front. We took advantage of three simple deals to really enhance our experience. First, Giovanni's has a coupon for a free pitcher of soda when you buy a dinner entrée. So go for dinner, and drinks are on the hou...Read More

Pi-Zzeria

Restaurant

Quote:
Pi-Zzeria offers a variety of perfectly palatable pizza pies for a pittance. We braved a long wait on a weekend evening and had a nice dining experience.Although there was a private restaurant parking lot across the street, we simply walked a few blocks from where we had parked earlier in the day. The restaurant is easy to find along the north side of Atlantic Avenue from its green awning dotted with its trademark Greek letter -- Pi.We chose to eat outside to enjoy the nice weather and avoid the darker, louder, and more crowded bar atmosphere indoors. It was quite pleasant, and the service was just fine.We ordered two specialty pizzas for our hungry foursome--a vegetarian pizza...Read More

Jungle Golf

Attraction

Quote:
Jungle Golf provided a disappointingly average round of miniature golf. At $9 a person, it was probably about twice as much as the average mini golf course. In fact, the price was comparable to its competitors. C'est la vie. From the street, it seemed to have more impressive theming and landscaping than its neighbor course, so we chose to play here.We didn't like that the course was fairly crowded, and the holes weren't particularly challenging and became somewhat repetitive. We wished that the impressive animals standing beside each hole would've bee...Read More

The Rudee Flipper is a 1.5- to 2-hour tour in the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay in search of dolphins. To my surprise, we actually saw quite a few bottlenose dolphins remarkably close to the boat. From the outset, I expected that we wouldn't see any dolphins at all. Dolphins in Chesapeake Bay? Nah! And if we did see anything, I figured the dolphins would be way out near the horizon. "See that gray speck?" the guide would say. "That's a dolphin." Fortunately I was wrong. For the first 45 minutes, our boat traced the Virginia Beach coastline to Chesapeake Bay, with the guide pointing out such varied wildlife as sea gulls, a couple pelicans, and some kite surfers. Eventuall...Read More
