Languishing in Leon, Nicaragua

Overview

Quote:
This old colonial city has a strong ancient history and a scarred past from the Revolution. After an earthquake in 1610, the city was moved, from the base of Volcan Momotombo, 32km to its present location near an indigenous village, Subtiava, that pre-dates Columbus. Grand cathedrals and little parks are tucked among the bustling cobbled city streets. During the wars, Leon was bombed and bullet holes are still visible. Almost the whole town fought against the tyranny of Somoza and continued their support of the FSLN during free elections in the 1990's. The main attractions are the murals to commemorate the heroes and denounce the villains.Quick Tips: Be prepared in the summer for hot ...Read More

Touted as the best budget option in Leon by my trusted Moon Handbook, I should have stayed here the first night and saved myself some grief. Located in a woman's home, but you would never know it unless you inquired about the family antiques decorating the open-air living room. Business was extremely slow due to the rainy season so she offered my room for $10 US instead of the usual fifteen or twenty. Rooms are individually decorated and well appointed with a comfy four-poster bed, antique standing mirror and bureau. Nightstand with a candle in case of a power outage were handy. The bathroom was clean with the usual cold shower. I made good use of the rocking chairs and full cable TV during ch...Read More

Via Via is a backpacker's haven in the historic city of Leon. The bar and restaurant attract those not staying there. Very reasonably priced, dorm beds are only $3 and not bunkbeds. The staff has great advice and tours leave from here. I had tasty veggie burritos and returned for a traditional Nica breakfast. Ingredients are fresh and prepared from scratch. Have a healthy fruit drink while you wait. Plenty of menu items for vegetarians and meat eaters. The heavy wooden tables are full of travelers over steaming coffee cups and travel guides. This is a great place to meet up with others.

Murals

Story/Tip

Anti-USA Mural Photo, Leon, Nicaragua
Quote:
The artists of Leon painted murals around the city on concrete building walls to honor the heroes of the wars and show animosity to the dictator Somoza and the United States. The colors are fading but the message of the CIA snake coming down on the people is still clear. Two murals around a doorway show the hero Sandino stomping Somoza and Uncle Sam. Others show the strength and determination of the Nicaraguan people. Outside of a museum someone spray painted an anti-Bush message. People were anxious to show me this and wanted me to take pictures.

The murals can be found by walking around the park towards the basketball courts.

The Culture Center houses art, outdoor murals and space for artists. Admission is free and Nicaraguan history books and videos are for sale. I mainly went to see the painting of Ronald Reagan on the shoulders of a Nicaraguan woman with her wrists slit and Henry Kissinger as a jester looks on. Large paintings and murals depict mythical Nicaraguan characters. A small collection of black and white photographs show important players in war history.
