Home of Cornell and the Moosewood Restaurant

A March 2001 trip to Ithaca by apete

Amazing town in the heart of New York with a beautiful campus, quaint downtown and wonderful outskirts full of waterfalls.

Visit Cornells Campus.
Eat at the Moosewood restaurant
Visit Taugnannock Falls. There are also many other falls around the area but you will have to go in the warmer months. The trails are closed in the winter. I am planning to go back to spend some time on the trails.

Quick Tips:

Use the new library in town. It is just on the other side of Ithaca Commons and has many terminals for Internet access.

Best Way To Get Around:

Downtown Ithaca is down a large hill from Cornell's campus so it is not an easy walk to and from campus, but both should be enjoyed.

Hotel | "Statler Hotel"

This hotel is located right in the middle of Cornell''s campus. Very good location if the reason you are in Ithaca has anything to do with the university. It is the home of the Hotel Administration School of the University so it is used by the students for their study.

The rooms are nice and basic. There is valet parking so that you can find a spot to park while you are staying with the hotel and are on campus.

Restaurant

I went in for a breakfast sandwich and it took a long time to get it. When I did, it wasn't worth the wait. The brownie on the otherhand was fantastic. I would stick to the bakery items if you stop at the Home Dairy.

Ned's PizzeriaBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

I love these pizzerias that have a selection of slices that you can choose from and then they will toss it into the oven to warm it up before they serve. I had a slice of olive, feta and tomato and it was good and cheap.

The famous Moosewood Restaurant. I was excited to hear that it resided in Ithaca. I have cooked using one of their many receipe books several times. I ended up having the salmon glazed with a Miso Ginger glaze. It was very good. And the lemon sorbet for dessert was also very tasty.

They don't take reservations. We went and waited 20-30 minutes and then had a wonderful dinner. If you plan on having the fish, I have heard it goes quickly so you may want to get there early. Each day has new specials.

Plum Tree SushiBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

I had a very good meal here. Sushi is my comfort food and I like to try it in every place that I go.

A wide selection of specialty rolls as well as the standard fish/vegetable selection. I tried the Plum Tree Roll which was one of the most beautiful rolls I have ever ordered with 5 different colors of roe on top.

Fox Run VineyardsBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

There are many vinyards outside of the Ithaca area along the Finger Lakes. The best one that we had stopped in was Fox Run. It was recently remodeled.

They have several wines which are all available for tastings but each day they have a complimentary wine tasting list which you can run through from dryest to sweetest or just selct the ones you want. After that the additional wines can be tasted 2 for a dollar. I purchased the 1999 Merlot and the 1998 Chardonnay.

They also have tours on the hour.

A smaller vineyard that has a pretty good variety. Tastings are $1 or free if a purchase is made. We ended up buying a bottle of Eye of the Bee which is a very sweet red/blush. The winter tasting room is not too inviting and may look like no one is around but just walk in the door and someone will be with you.

Amazing Falls that you can drive to and have a great view. The trails are closed in the winter but it is still worth it to drive through and see. These were the best falls in the area and it is within a 10 minute drive from Ithaca.

These falls are also highly recommended. Again, they are very close to town. The trails are closed in the winter but still worth the visit. I am planning on a return trip to hit this among many other parks in the area.

Attraction | "Cornell Campus Tour"

This is a student led tour through the heart of Cornell's campus. It was very informational to me for I knew nothing about the campus. It is set up for prospective undergrad students but anyone can participate. It claims to be an hour and fifteen minutes, but ours lasted a good half hour longer than that.
