Hawaii

A May 2006 trip to Honolulu by civicdidex

Hawaii

Overview

Quote:
Tons of shopping, a huge mall. Great beaches with clean water.

Quick Tips:

Get to know some of the locals, look for coupon books in the hotel lobby, only go to the small abc stores.

Best Way To Get Around:

Not much traffic on weekends, any mode of transportation is good. Bus for short trips, rental for long trips.

Diamond Head State Monument

Attraction | "Diamond Head"

Quote:
Are you ready for some hiking? Diamond Head has a great view from the top...once you get there. It is a moderate-long hike, I'd say about 2 to 3 miles. The path was rocky and was only paved on some parts. It was wet that day, so the ascent was slippery. It took a good half of the day and it was relatively cheap. Take the bus there and the hike is an extra .75 mile.

Waikiki Beach

Attraction | "North Shore"

Quote:
Known for its killer waves, the north shore is for all the surfers and body boarders out there. Much quieter than Waikiki. I enjoyed the beaches because they were much cleaner than Waikiki's due to less people. If you want total privacy, hit another island or take your chance on the east shore.

Hanauma Bay Marine Preserve

Attraction | "Hanauma Bay"

Quote:
The world famous Hanauma Bay is the home to many exotic fish and turtles. If you have never been snorkeling, this is a great place to start. The waters are calm and clear, shallow for hundreds of feet. There is a bit of a reef so stay away from standing around there. This place is great for people without glasses. Glasses interfere with the snorkel mask.

Germaine's Luau

Attraction

Quote:
Great buffet and live dancing. For the alkys, be sure to buy the Germaine luau beer glass, it makes each drink double size. Also, pay extra for top shelf, the included alky is low grade 89 octane. The bus ride there was even entertaining. We had the owners son as a guide and he cracked a lot of jokes and made the 30+ minute ride feel short. This is a must see for first timers.

FOOD

Story/Tip

Quote:
Hiroshis, a good place to cook your own beef. Kobe, teppan style cooking (cook right in front of you). Great for 8 people or less.

Leonard's bakery, I personally did not like their famous cream puffs.

Matsumoto shaved ice, not the best I have ever had, but it still hits the spot on a hot day!
