I Left My Heart in Colorado

Overview

Aspens. Photo, Powderhorn, Colorado
Quote:
Southwest Colorado has a natural grace and beauty that is spellbinding. Sage-covered hills, enormous rock formations, towering Colorado Blue Spruce trees, Aspen forests, winding streams, and abundant wildlife colored our week spent there. It is the only place where I could truly disconnect from life’s stresses and walk away feeling refreshed, re-energized, thankful for being given the opportunity to experience a portion of this state’s magnificence and ultimately saddened to leave.

Quick Tips:

Take zillions of photos, enjoy the people, breathe in as much of the mountain air as you can, forget about life for a while and just BE.

Best Way To Get Around:

Definitely by car.

Garlic Mike's

Restaurant

Quote:
Well-deserved People's Choice Winner for the last 3 years running, Garlic Mike's offers a great selection of fantastic Italian food. If the weather is warm, opt to sit outside under the tent, have a glass of wine and listen to the river rushing by. The service is good and the atmosphere is inviting.

Possibly the best Mexican food we've ever had! Super fresh, full of flavor, and prepared while you watch. Teocalli is a colorful, tiny little restaurant that most recently won Crested Butte's Award for "Best Bang for the Buck" an award well-deserved. Fantastic!

True Grit Cafe

The True Grit Café is a rustic, casual restaurant with a charming history and loads of Colorado hospitality. We dashed in for lunch and grabbed some burgers then washed them down with generous 20 ounce iced teas. It really hit the spot. The movie paraphernalia makes it hard to ignore that this was the setting for scenes from the movie “True Grit” starring John Wayne but supplies an entertaining topic for conversation. The restaurant fills up quickly for lunch - apparently even the locals find it irresistible.

Garden of the Gods

Attraction

Garden of the Gods Photo, Colorado Springs, Colorado
Quote:
Garden of the Gods is a free National Park and a registered National Natural Landmark. The winding road leads you through giant red sandstone formations, pivoting boulders and sandstone spires. Hiking trails invite guests to hike, bike or even view the park on horseback. Even in the rain the park was quite busy. There is a Trading Post that offers unique gifts, food and an informational video about the park.

It is said that the canyon was once owned by a private party that advertised it for sale in a national newspaper and, upon the urging of his wife, donated it to the city of Ouray. What a gift! The metal grate steps begin at dizzying heights that make you want to hold on for dear life and hardly let go long enough to take a photo. I’m not that great with heights to begin with, and this really put my phobia to the test. Then you can walk down the steps into the base of the canyon but have to brave the steps again to exit. In addition, there is an even further climb that takes you another 500 feet up the canyon for a beautiful view into the city of Ouray. The park prides themselves on their uniqu...Read More

Scenic River Tours

Scenic River Tours offers Rafting trips, fishing trips and rock climbing. We opted for the rafting and chose a two-hour long, Class III (meaning - you’re going to get wet) rafting trip down the Taylor River. Our guide put us at ease right away, gave us sound instructions and launched us on our way. The rapids were exciting enough for this first-timer and the section of the river we traveled winds through a canyon with mountains looming overhead on either side. We were hoping to spy a big horned sheep but never did. If you go, keep in mind, we went in the middle of August and the water coming down from the mountains was still so cold that I lost the feeling in my hands and feet. Do what you can...Read More
