There are still a few places in Japan where the ancient art of cormorant fishing continues to be practiced. For how long, no one knows. So of course I had to set out to try it. My guide was my goodwill guide, and he was more than willing to go, as he had never been. By communicating with him via email ahead of time, he was able to procure reservations.
Before going to the boat, we went to the food mail under Nagoya station and bought a variety of things to eat. We could have ordered a meal with the boat trip, but I really did not know what that would include.
We arrived a little early and walked around. We walked a little too much, as we had to run for the boat. We were almost the last ones on.
The boat goes out for a ride on the river, and you enjoy either the meal you brought or one that you paid for. The atmosphere is a sort of after-work party, and we quickly got to know our neighbors, who where having a business bash.
The boat goes back to shore for a quick pit stop, and then out again. People are dressed in a variety of ways. A boat pulls up next to each boat and plays music on a sort of xylophone. And finally the sun sets.
The boats with the cormorants go down river, with the birds pulling the boat. Each boat that is out pulls up next to the boat with the birds for a short time. You can see them handle the birds and take the fish from them. Afterwards, all the boats pull together near shore, and they do a little demonstration with the birds.
Quite a different excursion!
