Stormy South West

An August 2006 trip to United States by Appertey

Quote: I was expecting relentless sun and monotonous blue skies for two weeks in Southern California, Arizona and New Mexico. They say it never rains in Southern California. The same cannot be said for the other two states. Then again, there was still plenty of sunshine and some fantastic desert scenery.

Coronado Island

Attraction | "Coronado"

Quote:
This is one of the biggest beaches I've ever seen. There's loads of seaweed but the sand and the water are clean and the waves are high enough for a good splash without having to worry about the kids being swept out into the Pacific. There's not much in the way of facilities, and if you don't come prepared with food and drink, it's best to station yourself close to the Coronado Hotel at one end of the beach, or it'll be a long walk to get lunch. Nonetheless, it's a beautiful spot for a day out, and claims to have been rated one of the US's top ten beaches (a little generous).

Sea World

Attraction

Quote:
Sea World is beautifully done, but expect more of an aquarium and animal park than an amusement park. The main attractions are the various shows, which are a bit cheesy, but very professionally put together. There is only one real thrill ride, which you will see as you go in - but it's worth doing two or three times if the queues aren't too long. The site is large, and a day is needed to take it all in at leisure. In summer, try to stay late, as the park is quieter after dark, providing you stay away from the flag-waving music show. If you haven't got kids, you might want to give this a miss - it's not tremendously good value, and there are quite a few extras to pay for.

Yuma State Prison

Attraction

Quote:
Even though it was a scorching 40 Celsius, we had a very pleasant couple of hours exploring the old Arizona state prison site in Yuma. This is a beautifully located and very well looked-after spot, and there is a good introductory film that is worth taking in before touring the old cells and the grounds of the prison. There are also plenty of very interesting exhibits on the former inmates, with all the juicy details included. Well worth a stop.
