As one of the oldest cities in Japan, Tokyo is known for its cultural and historical sites. As a modern city in Asia, it also boasts one of the best shopping districts from young and hip to luxe couture. Here are some areas to check out:
Omotesando: an avenue filled with shoppers, tourists, and the locals alike starts right out of Harajuku station. It has its own station (JR - Omotesando Station). This upscale shopping district boasts many large international fashion houses such as Gucci, Theory, YSL, Bottega Veneta among others. The newest addition to this luxury shopping district is the Omotesando Hills. Just opened this year (2006), this upscale shopping plaza houses over 130 shops and many chic cafes.
Roppongi: As a district known for wild nightlife and expatriates, tourists will be able to find many English-speaking bars and restaurants.
Shibuya: The apotheosis of young shopping district. Shibuya 109, one of the largest shopping complex for the young and hip is almost always crowded with fashionable teens.
Ginza: Another hot shopping spot located in Chuo Ward, attracts the sophisticated crowd of Tokyo. There are many department stores, cafes, and restaurant that will meet your styles and expectations. But, beware, as with most other stations, Ginza station can get VERY crowded.
Quick Tips:
Many places will not take credit cards so make sure to have traveler's checks and some cash readily available. Also, it is more economical to buy a Railway Pass if you are going to be in the Tokyo Metro area for more than a week. Check out the pricing online, as they have non-Japanese passport holder's discount.
Best Way To Get Around:
Public transportation is safe, reliable, and affordable. Most of the places are in a walk-able distance if you book your hotel in one of the shopping districts (Ginza, Daikanyama, Aoyama, Omotesando)
