Overview

What can you do on Emerald Isle? The best answer is to spend every available moment on the beach. There is swimming, surfing, fishing, kayaking, sailing, charter boating, and biking. If you get tired ot the pleasant Atlantic (how could that happen?), there is good shopping nearby, a movie theatre, video rentals, internet coffee shop, and several nice restaurants. The island is a peaceful residential haven without the touristy hotels that can ruin the atmosphere. The best way to house yourself at Emerald Isle is to rent a cottage or duplex. There is something available for all size groups in all price ranges.Quick Tips: **Bring binoculars so you can catch the frequent schools o...Read More

I know the owners of this ocean-front rental personally, and I have stayed at this house twice a year for the past four years. It is HEAVEN. Sea Garland is the eastern or left half (see photo below) of a grand three-level house (keep in mind that the island runs in a strip from west to east, so that when you face the ocean, you are actually facing SOUTH). The rental is a giant duplex. A kids'' indoor play area and laundry on the ground floor, three bedrooms (one with two sets of bunk beds) and two baths on the middle floor, and the master bedroom, bath, and living area on the top floor. All floors have outdoor access to balconies and boardwalks and all ocean side rooms have huge picture w...Read More

The Sip-N-Surf not only serves great coffee (they roast it on the premises) but dishes up light sandwich wraps and deserts as well. The atmosphere is airy and family-friendly; the owners frequently have their own family inside with them. Half of the shop is in a computer facility, with six computer stations and an ISDN connection to the Internet. See their web site (sip-N-surf.com) for information on rates. Sometimes they have live music. Stop in!

Sometimes you need a taste of civilization while at the beach. You can't miss at Tortugas, one of a handful of fine restaurants on Emerald Isle. They serve "steaks, fresh local seafood, gourmet pizzas and pastas, chef’s Caribbean creations," and you don't have to get as dressed up as you do on the mainland!! Eat lunch and dinner there Monday through Saturday; they serve a Sunday brunch from 10 until 3pm.

Whenever we stay at Emerald Isle, we always make the fifteen minute trip to visit The Light Within in nearby Morehead City. They stock great books, cards, gifts, aromatherapy items, CDs, snacks, soups, and produce. They've recently begun making catered box dinners that are vegetarian, dairy free, and can be low fat. You can even subscribe to weekly meal plan or pick up your food a la carte. Their menu items include Southern red Rice and Pecan Wrap ($4), okra gumbo ($6/pint); baked seasoned tofu ($6), “not your mother’s green beans” ($5/pint). The Light Within offers yoga classes, massage, wellness consulting, tai chi, and hair analysis. A very cool place run by really friendly people.

A twenty-minute drive from Emerald Isle, Beaufort has lots of fine shopping, whether you're looking for antiques, jewelry, crafts, clothing, or nautical stuff. Two of my particular favorites:

Handscapes Gallery on the Beaufort waterfront. They carry beautiful items—handmade jewelry, ceramics, textiles, prints, sculpture, art glass, leather, wood, paintings, 252-728-6805

The Fudge Factory, 400 Front St., pretty near Handscapes. Try the walnut fudge--it has a wonderful maple-y cast to it.
