Home, home on the range in Scottsdale

An April 2001 trip to Scottsdale by BeAdventureous!

Quote: From the lush Hyatt Gainey property with a white sandy beach, to a dude ranch experience herding cattle with the cowboys, this was a trip to remember! The spa at the hotel was fabulous, the best facial I've ever had. And the food there was fabulous!

Getting on horses and rounding up cattle was a highlight, what an experience! A desert ride in jeeps and a picnic out in the open was memorable as well. Learning the different cactus and plants of the area and hearing the Indian uses of each wa most interesting. A sidetrip to Sedona was the BEST! Getting to see the artists at work, especially Thenia Rainey who does incredible pillows to take home at art shows in the area.Quick Tips: Pack your jeans, boots and cowboy hats, scarfs. If you wear contacts, take them out before the cattle drive, it stirs up the dust. Relax and just have fun. Brush up on your Texas two-step dancin... The property was lush and incredible! Open air with waterfalls, bouginvilla, herb gardens, sandy beaches. Their spa was excellant, the best facial I have ever had. No jacuzzi, but a nice sauna and steamroom. The jacuzzi outside was not hot enough and small children were swimming in it. The rooms were not large, but nice. The margaritas were not that great, order the ice cream drink with Tia maria, is it FABULOUS. The food was great and the entertainment was good. Don''t order the potato pancakes, they were horrid!

A Cuban restaurant with outdoor seating. This is a unique place to go. The pork tamales were great, as was the chicken and steak. The sauces were terrific, very different. Did not like the avocado dip nor the marqueritas, but the peruvian beer was decent. The flan was delicious, but the coconut one was too sweet. The specialty coffees were very strong. The sangria looked wonderful. Wish we had ordered it instead of the drinks we did.

This is a MUST! Order the duck tacos, and the dessert of creme brulee or/ homemade ice creams. The location is excellant but unpretentious and the cuisine is actually French cooking with a southwestern flair. A sweet olive tree is on the right side of the property and gives a real Mediterranean feel.

A festive marketplace atmosphere with live entertainment. Shops like Tommy Bahama with beach and golf clothing and lots of palm tree motif, glassware, platters, candle sconces, yummy pillows in brillant colors, Galleriez with terrific posters and doormats, candles that smell good enough to eat, cool book-ends that look like the Eiffle Tower, great lamps.

Story/Tip

Quote:
Saddle up your horses, we got some cattle to drive home on the range! What a grand experience for a day! About 25 of us greenhorns rode into the desert, which was a bit rough terrain. But that just made it more thrillin! The horses knew their way around, but we still got a rush riding over to the lone cow making its way out of the group and herding "the little doggie" along with the bunch. The wildflowers were stunning, every color of the rainbow and the blooming cactus (and you thought it was onion rings) were brilliant pinks and oranges. Be sure and take your contacts out if you wear them, cause it gets awfully dusty. Wear a bandana, it serves a purpose, rather than just looking the part. ...Read More
