I chose low to mid range hotels for my trip to South Carolina, and as usual, the Holiday Inn Express served as a reasonable place to stay. There is a particular problem with this specific one however. Given it''s location of only two miles from Fort Jackson,a large Basic Training post for the U.S.Army, when a class graduates, the graduates often stay at this hotel. This was the case when we stayed there and it was loud until two in the morning. Nothing became too obnoxious however and the room as typical of this chain was clean and roomy enough as far as it goes. A continental breakfast is offered until 9:30 AM with a complimentary copy of USA Today. There is one elevator and outside corri...Read More

The Waffle House

Restaurant

Conviently located right next door to Holiday Inn Express, Fort Jackson, this place is simple, the food is good (especially breakfast), and the service is excellent. I recomend this place for breakfast if you are looking for a reasonably large, inexpensive southern style breakfast.

This is part of a chain and there are many of these in the surrounding area.

This restaurant was recomended to me by the desk clerk of my hotel, teaches me to listen to him. This place was not the best mexican restaurant I've ever eaten at. The people really did try to be helpful, but the service was interesting at best. We placed our coctail orders, I ordered my usual screwdriver, (Vodka and Orange Juice),how tough can it be? First the waiter returned and asked me how to make the drink, ten minutes later the assistant bartender came to the table and asked for an explanation of the ingredients. The next visitor to the table was the bartender himself, and he like the others didn't know how to make a screwdriver. I found it unbelievable that a restaurant with a full servic...Read More

We accidentally stumbled across this rugged old church while driving to the Thomas Sumpter Memorial, and were immediately fascinated by it's history. We were lucky to run into four members of the church who were lamenting the fact that they will not be able to worship here for the next five years. Turns out the church has termites and is condemed until a restoration is complete. This restoration will take five years, and then the church will again hold services. Since the church is constructed of the indigenous clay rich mud in a poured fashion, the main structure is sound and viewing from the outside can continue. The history of the church is the interesting part of its story anyway. Th...Read More

Visiting a cemetary may seem an odd activity while on vacation, but it sometimes offers an insight into the past of a place, impossible to attain any other way. Such is the case here. The grounds here are not magnificent, and there are no large mausoleums to recommend this place. The grounds here are subtle and solemn, quiet and peaceful pointing you back to a time when things were simpler. There are no cathedrals here or large marble crypts, merely simple graves and headstones. What this place offers the visitor is a reflection on the history of this particular small area of our country. Today such a perspective is rare. There is no admission charge and there are no gift shops. A...Read More
