if you do manage to go to italy in the hottest days of the summer, which happen to fall in august when all of the italians are vacationing elsewhere, AND if you happen to be in rome exactly coincidental with the onslaught of a thrall of international tourists who are there, say, for the millennial jubilee to join six million of their teenage christian pilgrim friends, you should be prepared to maintain a healthy sense of humor, drink lots of water and get comfortable with either waiting in a four-hour line to get into the vatican or to making up some story about how your child and husband are still inside and you have to get back in through the exit to find them.Quick Tips: the only real unfo...Read More

this little four-star hotel about 4 blocks away from the termini train station in rome was lovely. the staff were always particularly friendly, spoke many languages (which came in handy since the three words i know in italian did not help to communicate my hotel-guest needs to them) and were extremely helpful with tourist-type questions. the room was amply sized and had an actual shower stall, which i had come to miss after a week of wrestling with the more traditional european hand-helds. the hotel had a lovely roof deck (which we didn''t have time to relax at, but it was lovely anyhow) and the waitstaff at breakfast could always be counted on good for gregarious interaction.

although the lobby looked nice, the rooms were small and dark, and the bathroom was pretty scary. our room also happened to open out onto the street, which made it pretty loud at night. granted, i might have had a chip on my shoulder about the place because on of my bags got stolen from the lobby when i went up to check out the room, but in truth i wonder how it earned its three stars.

The above price range, just so you know, includes an appetizer, an entrée, two glasses of wine, a dessert and coffee. Not only was this meal inexpensive, it was fantastic. My friend and I wandered into this little restaurant on our last night in Rome (how I wish we had discoverd it sooner--we would have been there every night!) when we saw a couple tables for two set in the street with candles on them, and then looked deeper into the restaurant, which was open to the street with french (italian?) doors swung wide. The ambience was fantastic--quiet enough for my friend and I to speak in low tones, and certainly a romantic place to bring a person you felt (or wanted to feel) romantic about. T...Read More

i imagine that on a normal day when there aren't six million christian youths who have descended upon rome to celebrate the millennial jubilee and who, while awaiting their dedicated sunday mass with the pope, have nothing to do but wait in line for HOURS in the blazing hot italian summer sun to get into the vatican, it is a relatively painless effort to move about vatican city. even in face of all this humanity, i found the experience of being in this city-within-a-city to be awe inspiring. the simple fact that this place exists independently of rome (it even has its own separate police force) is miraculous, but when you set foot within the walls of this city, you truly feel as if you are stepping i...Read More

in addition to visiting rome (where i stayed the longest, because the rest of the country appeared to be nearly completely closed up for summer vacation), i actually landed in milan (which was REALLY a ghost town), took a day trip to venice (which was not AS closed up as milan, but even quiet was a charming place) and then passed through florence (where one of my pieces of luggage was stolen, so we left within 24 hours of arriving) on the way down to rome. [in fairness, i had been to florence before when i was in college and had the opportunity to visit all the wonderful places one visits in florence, like the duomo and the ponte vecchio, which are phonomenal.] if there was one place w...Read More
