A Place to Call Home - Onalaska, WI

Overview

Quote:
Onalaska is basically a suburb of the college town of La Crosse, but happens to contain most of the major shopping in the area (the Valley View Mall was gerrymandered into being part of La Crosse, but the rest of the shopping area off exits 4 and 5 is Onalaska). The area has quite a bit of natural beauty, with bike trails serving the area. The summer time brings farmer's markets and many seasonal festivals. We also have many small businesses that offer specialty items. Quick Tips: Onalaska is probably not a tourist destination in itself, but it is worth a visit if you are in the area for something else! Best Way To Get Around: Usually you will need your own vehicle to ge...Read More

My husband and I stayed over night here for our first anniversary and enjoyed our stay very much. We booked our stay through the Stoney Creek website, which at the time was running a promotional Internet rate of $67 a night for any room but a suite. At that rate, our stay was a steal! We booked an expanded king whirlpool room, which gave us a king room with a whirlpool tub for two in the corner, plus cable, a mini-fridge, and a spacious bathroom. The entire hotel is done up in a rustic hunting-lodge type theme, which adds character and sets it apart from simply being another chain. We were given a corner room overlooking a grassy area- the views were great! Before our stay, we had no i...Read More

It took us a while to discover Lakeview after moving to Onalaska, but once we did, we went there about 3 times in the next month! We have never been to dinner there, so I will confine my comments to breakfast and lunch (which are both served until 2pm, when Lakeview closes until dinnertime). Lakeview is my kind of restaurant. The portions are reasonably priced and sized. While more things come a la carte than at your typical restaurant, it doesn't make things more expensive - my husband spends about the same on brunch as he would at a place like Perkins, while I spend a little less, because I can order something that fits my appetite. Lakeview is situated right on Lake Onalaska, a...Read More

UnWine'd

Attraction

Quote:
UnWine'd is a fairly new wine shop tucked into a new business development along main street. They carry a wide selection of wines from around the world (plus several local wines) as well as specialty items like chocolate, cheese, dips, and other wine-related items. The staff are friendly and helpful, and they have a limited number of wines available for free tastings at any given time. Unwine'd also has classes available from time to time. For a small fee, you get a relaxing evening that includes wine and often food. A recent class taught students how to pair wine with holiday foods. I like shopping at UnWine'd because of the small, intimate feel of the store. At larger stores ...Read More
