In the Woods in New Hampshire

A travel journal to Washington by Mary Blakney

Quote: Here's an out-of-the-way spot for nature-lovers on a budget. It's a great getaway, because the hilly terrain and distance from towers makes modern communications equipment spotty at best. This area is peaceful, uncrowded and unpolluted. But if you can't cope without soda machines and payphones, stay away!

Pillsbury State Park is located on the hiking trail called the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway. It's also such a great place for camping that some of the hardy natives camp there in the snow in the middle of the winter! If you're interested in history, go in July when the East Washington School is open. Volunteers keep the one-room schoolhouse preserved. It's complete with antique books, rules for the teacher, the wood stove, and of course the privy. In the fall the leaves will turn to flaming orange, yellow and red, then to gentler shades of russet and brown, mixed with the dark green of the pines and hemlocks. Hunters, look for a deer or a bear in the cornfields of a family dairy fa...Read More

This is a rustic two-room log cabin with a hand pump at the sink. Tentative opening date is this fall in time for the hunting season. It's far rougher than a motel but not as rough as a tent. You'll be surprised that my family and I used to live here year-round.

If you're looking for something a little more 'civilized', the Inn at Maplewood Farm is a bed and breakfast with some beautiful views. I haven't stayed there, though. Their number is 603-464-4242.

The food is delicious, the service is great and the atmosphere is peaceful. I've heard that they have a bar, but I've never seen it. Ask for a table with a view of the river.

This is the only place in Washington to buy anything, unless you want a fire permit. Step up to the counter and get a pretty good sandwich and listen to the local gossip. Since the General Store and Post Office in neighboring Lempster closed several years ago, this is the closest thing left to that old American classic.

Buy a paper, ask directions, get a flowering plant from the nursery across the street, and while you're at it get a sandwich from the lunch counter. They claim to have great cheeseburgers, but I had a roast beef sandwich there once and it was so good I never order anything else. You can buy a fishing or hunting license here, get directions or just soak up the very woodsy culture. But whatever you do, don't be in a hurry. Part of that woodsy culture is to be laid back and take the time to give you exactly the sandwich you want.
