Lonely in London

A March 1998 trip to London by solace

Finding a place to soothe my soul while traveling alone through London was a challenge though not impossible.

Lonely in LondonBest of IgoUgo

Overview

The Tate Museum is one of my favorite places to visit as well as most shows in the Theater district. Tickets are affordable and everywhere.

Quick Tips:

Despite the stigma of being a typical American Tourist the double decker bus tour is a must do if you are only there for a short period of time. It hits all the sights.

Best Way To Get Around:

The tube, underground public transportation, is the best way to move about London. It is very clean and affordable. Buy a week long ticket for the best value.

English PubsBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Any English Pub"

Eating at an English Pub can be a humbling experience. Keep in mind that beer is always warm, butter is served with everything, sour cream is sweet and haggas is not a comfort food. Chose wisely and if you are worried stick with fish and chips. At the worst a baked potato with cheese will always do.

Horseback RidingBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

There is nothing quite like riding in the Enlgish country fields of Oxford. The smells and sounds that suround you on a trot through the greens attack your senses and trick you into believing you are a Prince or Baroness. It is a highly underrated experience and one I can not express with enough feeling to generate the awakening it gave me.

Portobello Road MarketBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Portabello Market"

This is the place to shop, eat and mingle with the locals and tourists almost every weekend. The atmosphere is pleasing and overwhelming all at once. It brings me back to my youth when I would watch Angela Lansbury in Bed Knobs and Broomsticks. The book section is phenominal and the jewlery unusual, (though not always genuine). I would stay away from the electronics as well because they do not come with a guarantee, but the antiques will impress even the most weathered collector.

Tate ModernBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Tate Museum"

The museum itself is near London Bridge and the streets leading to it make you take in the atmosphere of centuries past. As you enter the building avoid the flow of visitors and take your own route. Some of the best exhibits are not necessarily on tour but are permanent hangings.

Les MiserablesBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

I have seen this play over 8 times and seeing it at the Palace Theater was the last of these viewings. I can honestly say seeing it in London was the best performance I have ever taken in. The play came to life in darkness and magic of that theater. See it again if you have to but if this is your first time you are in for a real treat.

Blood BrothersBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

The play is unusal but it is clearly up to the actors who are playing the main characters to determine its correlation to you. The two mother's roles are the most interesting and certainly worth a few extra bucks for a closer seat.

Big Bus CompanyBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Big Bus Tour"

You can chose a number of different bus routes that will bring you all over the city. The best is the yellow and blue lines. The red, (I think), forces you to Harrods. Harrods is okay to visit but you might as well be in Bloomingdales with a significant price increase. See the buildings. They are spectacular.
