San Pedro
The South Bay is a region in the southwest peninsula of Los Angeles County, California, United States. Its name stems from the fact that it stretches along the southern shores of Santa Monica Bay, which forms its western border. The South Bay includes all communities south of the 105 Freeway and west of Long Beach (with the exception of Compton, which is generally considered South LA). A more restrictive definition of the South Bay includes only the Beach Cities, the cities of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, and Torrance. This definition is more commonly found near the ocean, while not as accepted in the inland portions of the South Bay. The region is bordered on the north by West Los Angeles, on the northeast by South Los Angeles, on the east by the Gateway Cities, and on the south and west by the Pacific Ocean.

LA's South Bay is an economic powerhouse in SoCal. The Wilmington and San Pedro areas of Los Angeles are home to the Port of Los Angeles, the busiest port in the US. (While not part of LA South Bay, the port of Long Beach sits directly next door. Together, these twin ports are the 5th busiest in the world.)

It's home to major production facilities to aerospace companies such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, which center around the Los Angeles Air Force Base. It's also home to both Toyota and Honda's North American headquarters.

Oil refining is another important component of the LA South Bay's economy. Major South Bay refiners include BP (ARCO facility in Carson), Chevron (El Segundo), ConocoPhillips (Wilmington), ExxonMobil (Torrance), Shell (Wilmington), and Valero (Wilmington).

As far as the population goes, it's quite diverse. There are people of European, Asian/Pacific Islander, African, and Latino heritages. In fact, Gardena is one of the oldest Japanese/Hawaiian communities in the United States.

As for leisure, the Port of Los Angeles is a major cruise ship ports for cruises down to Mexico and other vacation destinations. It's also the launching point for ferries to the popular resort destination of Catalina Island.

Quick Tips:

There are quite a few things to do around LA's South Bay. San Pedro is host to the Port of Los Angeles, a major cruise ship port, cruises to and from all ports of call stop or originate here. There are also cruises to nearby Catalina Island.

There are various shopping malls around, the largest one being Torrance's Del Amo Fashion Plaza. With over 300 stores, it's the 5th largest shopping mall in the United States! There are smaller regional malls around surrounding cities as well.

Another enormous draw are the warm sands of the South Bay Beaches. Specifically, the beaches of Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, and Hermosa Beach, which have hosted events on the AVP pro Volleyball tour.

Best Way To Get Around:

As with much of Southern California, South Bay LA is pretty much accessible by freeway only. There is a light rail system that runs in the center of the 105 Freeway, but it's lightly traveled due to inconvenient routings and the fact it doesn't travel between congested areas.

The Hawthorne Municipal Airport is located in LA's South Bay. It's a small airport catering to civil aviation and some helicopter traffic.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) neighbors LA's South Bay, since it's next to El Segundo. It's considered the second busiest airport in the United States.

Busy Bee MarketBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Making the roast beef sandwich!
The plain outside of the Busy Bee Market doesn't suggest much. But come lunchtime and the long lines of hungry people spilling out the door tell a different story. I've heard lots about the Busy Bee from the locals, from cops, firemen, mailmen, and anybody that likes a really good sandwich.

The Busy Bee Market is at the corner of Walker & 24th Street in the San Pedro area of Los Angeles. I arrived just before lunchtime, beating the crowds. The inside has a cashier counter at the front, the sandwich counter at the back, a few shelves of foodstuffs in the middle, and a bunch of branded drink coolers along the sides with probably every bottled drink imaginable, including alcoholic.

I wandered around to the back where the sandwich counter is at. There is a nice display of all sorts of meats and cold cuts and cheeses. The menu board is pretty self explanatory with all sorts of hot sandwiches, cold sandwiches, and individual items, such as containers of freshly cooked BBQed sausages, BBQ chicken, meatballs!

I ordered a hot roast beef and pastrami sandwich for my friend. I got permission to step behind the counter and watch the employees make my sandwiches. They sliced open a nice foot-long roll of freshly baked bread and piled on plenty of avocado and provolone cheese. Then very generous portions of roast beef is piled on from a steaming bin of hot roast beef immersed in au jus sauce. The sandwich is topped off with a nice red pasta sauce (you can request it without if you like.) The pastrami is pretty much made the same way. The hot pastrami is fished out of the steaming bin of sauce and thickly piled onto the roll.

The sandwiches are wrapped up in butcher paper and handed over. I took the sandwiches and a few drinks I got out of the coolers to the counter. The total bill came out to $12.

There's no place to sit and enjoy the sandwiches, as this is pretty much a cash and carry out type of place. By now, more people had arrived and a line had started. I noticed that while some people grabbed a sandwich, chips, and drink for themselves, others ordered a bunch of sandwiches. There were many regulars, as the managers and employees greeted them by name.

I finally had a chance to eat my sandwiches, and they were excellent! The pastrami is very flavorful and juicy. The roast beef with red sauce was quite savory. The bread was nice and soft and held the juices of the meats quite well!

I'd definitely recommend the Busy Bee Market to anybody looking for a nice big satisfying sandwich! They're open from 9 AM to 6 PM Mon thru Sat, closed Sundays. From chatting with the managers, they used to close around 3 PM, but due to requests from many who want a sandwich for dinner, they now close at 6 PM.

King's Hawaiian Bakery & RestaurantBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "King's Hawaiian Bakery & Restaurant"

Mahi Mahi sandwich on a Hawiian roll with fries.
I love King's Hawaiian Bread, so when I heard about this restaurant, I had to go eat there. It's located in the city of Torrance on Sepulveda Boulevard between Crenshaw and Maple.

Parking is behind the restaurant. The actual King's Hawaiian commercial bakery is on the other side of the parking lot.

Since we arrived at noon, there was a 20-minute wait to be seated. The lobby serves as the bakery section. There was a real long bakery display filled with different cakes, such as guava cake, and other exotic flavors, cookies, pastries, and other desserts. There were also freestanding shelves filled with their famous Hawaiian bread, and other delicious variants, such as coconut & macadamia Hawaiian Bread, etc.

We were seated a few minutes earlier than the quoted 20 minutes. There is a big 8 foot tall leaning pineapple at the entry to the dining room, and the rest of the dining areas are decorated with island flair.

Our server was prompt and came over for our drink order. We both ordered Hawaiian style ice teas, which had a sweet sugary taste to them. Our server returned with a basket of warm...Hawaiian rolls and butter. (What else would you expect.)

The menu had Asian and Hawaiian dishes. I ordered the teriyaki beef lunch, which came with white rice and potato salad. My friend ordered the breaded mahi mahi sandwich, which comes with fries. We also ordered a fried calamari appetizer.

The Calamari was nice and crispy. It had a interestingly nice sweet and sour dip. We finished that up quickly. We also polished off the warm Hawaiian rolls and were given another basket. I could eat these rolls all day.

Our lunch entrees were brought to us a few moments later. My friend's mahi mahi sandwich has a panko crumb battered mahi mahi fillet on a Hawaiian roll and fries. I took a bite of his sandwich and it was quite tasty and fresh, but without any fishy taste. I had the teriyaki beef lunch special. The Teriyaki beef was nice and sweet.

Our total was $30 for 2 drinks, appetizer, and 2 lunch entrees. Not a bad price. The service was fast and friendly. I'd definitely go again! If you love King's Hawaiian Bread, you'd never leave this place.

I saw pictures of their breakfast items on the wall as I left. The King's Hawaiian bread French Toast and other breakfast items are supposed to be excellent. I must go back earlier for breakfast sometime. I'll let you know how it goes!

Whale & Ale PubBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "The Whale & Ale"

Steak & Mushroom Pie
The Whale & Ale claims to be San Pedro's only authentic British pub and restaurant. It's located near the intersection of 7th street and Palos Verde Street. There's plenty of parking behind the building. The Whale & Ale is located in a "deader" area of town.

Upon entering, the decor resembles an English Victorian parlor with plenty of rich dark wood paneling. There's a bar with a baby grand piano in the rear half of the restaurant. There's a fairly large upstairs dining area too.

We visited just after lunchtime. We were greeted promptly and seated by the waitress. We chose a table along the side of the dining area near the fireplace. The menu featured plenty of the expected British pub fare, such as fish-and-chips, steaks, sausage dishes, and meat pies. My friend chose a French dip sandwich and I chose the steak and mushroom pie. Imagine that, ordering a French dip in a British restaurant! Feh. I also ordered a fried calamari appetizer.

Our waitress took our order and returned with a basket of warm bread and butter cubes. I found the bread quite dense. I liked the taste, but I didn't like the dense texture much. Our fried calamari appetizer came out shortly thereafter. To my dismay, the calamari plate was about a third smaller than I had expected, and only had cocktail sauce for dipping. I prefer a tartar type of dipping sauce for fried calamari. The calamari tasted good nonetheless.

Once we were done with our calamari appetizer, our waitress brought out our lunches. My steak and mushroom pie turned out to be a bowl of steak and mushroom stew with a piece of puff pastry on top. I had somewhat envisioned a baked on puff pastry crust. It tasted pretty good though, and I ended up dipping most of the puff pastry into the stew. My friend's French dip sandwich came with fries. He said it was pretty good.

Our total bill came out to $28.25 for the appetizer, one soft drink, and two lunches. Service was good, food was good, but a bit different than what I had expected, location isn't too great though.

King's Hawaiian "The Local Place" RestaurantBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "King's Hawaiian Local Place Restaurant"

Bakery display at the Local Place
This is the fast service version of the King's Hawaiian Bakery & Restaurant. The Local Place is on Western, opposite of South Bay Toyota, just south of the 405 Freeway in Torrance.

The restaurant has a fairly good sized bakery section with a display of scrumptious exotic pastries and cakes, as well as more common baked goods like turnovers and donuts. The bakery section also has several shelves of King's Hawaiian's famous bread, and variants with raisins, and coconut, and other yummy combinations.

You order off their menu board and are given a number, and the staff will bring your food to you. Most of the fare is under $10 and has such items as Hawaiian bowls, burgers, and sandwiches. I ordered a teriyaki chicken burger with fries, and my friend ordered a breaded teriyaki pork bowl.

The cost was about $12 for the two entrees and two drinks. We found a seat and waited about 5 minutes before our lunches were brought out to us. my teriyaki chicken burger was nice and sweet, the way I like it. My friend's breaded teriyaki pork bowl was quite good too.

We were a bit too full to order any dessert from the bakery counter. I purchased a danish and loaf of macadamia-coconut Hawaiian bread to go. The total cost was $6. Yes, it costs a bit more than your local bakery, but then again, this is King's Hawaiian!

Star ChickenBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Quarter chicken lunch special
Star Chicken is a fast service restaurant located inside the Rolling Hills Plaza off of Crenshaw and Torrance Boulevard in Torrance. It’s in a small strip located directly opposite of the Macaroni Grill. I dined near the end of a weekday lunchtime with a friend.

There’s a menu board above the counter/cashier with all sorts of chicken dishes, sandwiches, and wraps. There are also side dishes such as potatoes, creamed spinach, and the like. Directly behind the counter is a gas fired rotisserie with dozens of chickens being roasted. Next to the cashier stations are the various side dishes on display.

I ordered the half BBQ chicken wrap lunch special which comes with a side. I chose the macaroni and cheese. My friend chose the quarter chicken lunch special which also includes a side. After much pondering, he chose the creamed spinach. We also each purchased soft drinks. Our total came out to about $11. Not bad!

We were given a number and we chose a table and waited about 5 minutes before our food was brought out to us. Our food was quite good. My half BBQ wrap had chunks of BBQ chicken, black beans, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and BBQ sauce wrapped up in a tortilla. It was a slight bit messy on the hands to eat though. My macaroni and cheese was pretty good. My friend devoured the quarter chicken and said it was quite savory. I tried some of his creamed spinach side dish and found it pretty good as well.

The cashier later brought out the other half of the BBQ wrap and gave it to me. She said since lunch was ending, they probably wouldn’t have used the other half anyways. That was quite an unexpected and welcome treat!

If you’re in the mood for chicken, I recommend this place. The staff is friendly and the food is good. I did notice that the only meat served was chicken, and there didn’t seem to be any other meat, such as beef or pork available. But then again, the name of this restaurant is Star CHICKEN!

Rascals Teriyaki Grill
Rascals Teriyaki Grill is a fast service restaurant specializing in Japanese food, specifically Teriyaki. There are two Rascals, one in Torrance and one in neighboring Gardena. A friend and I visited the Torrance location for lunch.

The Torrance Rascals Teriyaki Grill is located on Torrance Blvd. just west of Anza Avenue. It's in a small strip center next to Shakeys. The interior is pretty basic with an ordering counter, a self-serve drink section, and a separate pick-up/catering counter.

The menuboard has various teriyaki dishes, but also sandwiches, burgers, and hot dogs! I came for teriyaki, so I ordered the Teri Chicken Bowl and my friend ordered the Teri Dekuxe Chicken plate. The total with two drinks was $15.15.

We got our drinks and found a table. Our number was called rather quickly. I think it was only 3 minutes after we paid before our meals were ready. We picked them up at the counter.

The entrees were served on styrofoam plates and we were given plastic utensils. My Teri Chicken Bowl was basically grilled teriyaki chicken and sauce on a bed of white rice. A small container of cole slaw was included. My teriyaki chicken was tasty and sweet. I especially liked mixing the teriyaki sauce with the rice.

My friend's Teri Deluxe chicken entree is basically the same as my Teri Chicken Bowl, but a Chinese chicken salad is included. I tried some of his Chinese chicken salad and found it quite tangy and full of flavor.

I wasn't in an experimental mood to try new things that day. I enjoyed my food and it tasted as I expected teriyaki chicken to taste. The food was good and filling, as well as being fairly priced. I recommend Rascals to anyone looking for a solid Teriyaki lunch or dinner.

Red RobinBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Royal Red Robin Burger and California Chicken Burger
Red Robin is a chain of gourmet burger restaurants with something for all ages. They have food for the kids, burgers and drinks for teens, and a bar section for the adults. We visited the location inside the Galleria at South Bay in Redondo Beach by Hawthorne Boulevard and Artesia Boulevard. The Red Robin is located near the Nordstrom in the Galleria.

We were seated after a 5-minute wait. There were a lot of families with young children. The hostesses inflated balloons for the kids and also gave them coloring books and crayons as we waited. We were seated at a comfortable booth in the middle of the restaurant. It's quite loud in Red Robin with lots of kids talking and playing.

Out waitress greeted up promptly and took our drink orders. She returned with our drinks and took our orders. My friend ordered the Carnitas Fajitas, my other friend ordered the California Chicken Burger with a fried egg in the middle, and I ordered the Royal Red Robin Burger, which already comes with an egg in the middle. All of the burgers come with bottomless seasoned steak fries.

About 10 short minutes later, our orders were brought out. My friend's Carnitas Fajitas is made from tender, slow roasted pulled pork served with roasted peppers and onions with sides of warm flour tortillas, salsa and guacamole. The pork was quite tender and tasty.

My other friend had the California Chicken Burger. It's tender grilled chicken breast with Monterey Jack and guacamole, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and mayonnaise. He said the chicken breast was tasty and not dry at all!

I had the Royal Red Robin Burger. It's a thick burger with a fried egg on top, bacon, tomato, lettuce, and mayonnaise. I had the American cheese substituted with cheddar. It was nice and juicy and hearty. I seasoned my fries with the Red Robin Gourmet Seasoning (already at the table) and dipped them in ranch.

That was just the right amount of food, leaving us enough room to share a dessert. We ordered the Mountain High Mid Pie. It's chocolate and vanilla ice cream with peanut butter cookie bits, chopped peanuts, chocolate fudge, peanut butter, and a chocolate cookie crust, with lots of whipped cream, and a cherry on top. The chocolate was quite rich, and required a few gulps of water to take it down, but it was a really nice way to end a meal.

I like the food at Red Robin. The atmosphere might be a bit loud with all the kids though, it's definitely not a romantic restaurant. It's conveniently located inside the South Bay Galleria in Redondo Beach. The service and food were good. Our total bill for the 2 burgers, carnitas fajitas, mud pie, and 2 soft drinks was $41 including tax. I recommend Red Robin if you like a nice fun, casual burger restaurant.

Steaming steak fajitas!
A few people have been telling me how good Taxco Mexican Restaurant is. A few of my co-workers said they have catered lunches from Taxco in the past and it was delicious. I decided to try this out myself, so I went to the Taxco in San Pedro. There are two other Taxco locations in Harbor City and Lomita.

The restaurant is located in a strip mall at the corner of Western and Capitol in San Pedro. We went for an early dinner, and the restaurant was just starting to fill up. There are three dining areas, one in front, one at the very back, and a private dining room in the middle. We were seated in the back dining section. The ambiance is a no-frills Mexican family restaurant. Our server quickly brought us chips and salsa and took our drink orders.

The menu has standard traditional Mexican dishes, such as burritos, enchiladas, fajitas. My friend chose the steak fajita dinner and I chose the carne asada burrito. Our server brought our drinks and took our orders. When I ordered the burrito, our server asked me if I wanted it "wet." I asked him about it and he said the burrito would be topped with salsa, red sauce, herbs and spices and melted cheese for a dollar more. I opted to take my burrito "wet."

As we waited for our entrees, we feasted on the chips and salsa. The salsa was mildly spicy and fresh, and the chips were crispy. I think they may have been fried on the premises.

Our orders arrived and they looked great. My friend's steak fajitas were served on a heated iron plate and served with sauteed red and green bell peppers and onions. There was an insulated container of flour tortillas, but only two of them. There was also a side plate of rice and refried beans with melted cheese on top. My friend shared some of his fajitas with me and they were good, but the steak was a bit on the salty side for my personal taste. Even though there were only two tortillas on the container, our server quickly brought us more as needed. I guess that's to keep the tortillas fresh.

My "wet" carne asada burrito was very good. The burrito itself was good, but very messy to eat due to the "wet" sauces. The chunks of carne asade were quite good. The "wet" topping didn't add that much flavor to the burrito itself though.

Our total bill was $27.71 including tax and tip. It includes the fajitas, the wet burrito, and two drinks.

The food was pretty much as expected, nothing really out of the norm. There were a few things I didn't like about the tastes, but nothing really bad. If you want a quick bite of Mexican food to eat, then Taxco is the place. What we ate at Taxco is fairly good, but it doesn't really stand out to distinguish itself.

Claim JumperBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Oaxacan Sea Bas
The Claim Jumper is a large chain of family restaurants with a old western saloon. They specialize in family dining with large entrées. We visited the Torrance location on a Friday evening for dinner.

Claim Jumper is always popular, regardless of location, so we ended up waiting for about 45 minutes for a table. When we were finally seated, our server greeted up promptly and took our drink orders. The Claim Jumper is decorated similar to an old western saloon circa 1850. There's a self-serve salad bar in the middle of the restaurant, should somebody order the salad bar.

My friends decided to order the Oaxacan Sea Bass, the Rotisserie Chicken, which came with a choice of 2 sides, she chose the honey bran muffin and veggies, she also added a mini wedge salad. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak. My friends wedge salad and honey bran muffin came quickly. The muffin was baked in a mini-bundt tin rather than a conventional muffin tin. I tried some of the muffin, I'm not a fan of honey bran, but it had good texture and taste.

Our entrées came shortly thereafter. They were all fairly large, but my Chicken Fried Steak was huge! The Claim Jumper is known for its large portions. My friend said her Rotisserie Chicken was quite good, and not dry at all. She even ate some of the skin, as it had all the tasty herbs and spices rubbed over it. My other friend liked his Oaxacan Sea Bass. The Sea Bass is not from Oaxaca, but it's New Zealand Sea Bass cut thick and sauté, braised in a spicy traditional Oaxacan tomato herb broth and served over steamed rice. He said it was tasty, but the fish itself was a bit dry. He really liked eating the rice with the sauce though.

I loved my Chicken Fried Steak. There were two filets of breaded cube steak with mashed red potatoes and sauce with a biscuit. This entrée definitely isn't for dieters! The rich sauce and tasty steak made a good combination. We were too stuffed and had to take doggie bags home. Our server came by to see if we wanted dessert. Unfortunately we were too stuffed. The Claim Jumper specializes is very large desserts. The most famous dessert being it's Chocolate Motherlode Cake. It's a huge and very dense six layer chocolate cake with chocolate fudge and walnuts. Another example of unusually large desserts are the I'Declair. It's a cream filled eclair the size of a football.

Our total came out to $66, with 2 drinks, 3 entrées, and tax. I really like the Claim Jumper, we've been to other locations and the food is generally consistently good. It's a fun atmosphere and family friendly.

Callender'sBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Marie Callender's"

Club Sandwich and Beef Stroganoff
Marie Callender's is a chain of bakery/restaurants in the western US. I went with four friends to the Marie Callender's in Rancho Palos Verdes for dinner. The Marie Callender's here is located at the corner of Trudie (it's also Capitol) and Western Blvd.

We were seated immediately, as there weren't that many people in the restaurant. There's a pie display at the front. Marie Callender's is known for it's pies. In fact, on Thanksgiving morning, I've seen lines go around the corner for people to pick up their Thanksgiving pies.

The atmosphere was a bit quiet, as there were only 4-5 other tables with diners. Our server came over and took our drink orders. When she returned, we gave her our orders. My friends ordered the Beef Stroganoff, Spicy Guacamole Burger, Aged Cheddar and Jack Cheeseburger, Spicy Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, and I ordered the Triple Decker Traditional Club Sandwich.

We waited and chatted amongst ourselves for about 10-15 minutes before our entrées arrived en masse. All of our entrées looked pretty good. All talking stopped as we worked on our meals.

I liked my Triple Decker Traditional Club Sandwich, which has turkey, ham, bacon, lettuce, and tomato on parmesan bread. My main problem was that the triple decker sandwich was so thick it was difficult to fit in my mouth.

My friends liked their meals too. My friend's Spicy Guacamole Burger was tasty, but he found it messy to eat, as the burger's juices dripped off the burger and onto his hands. My other friend's beef stroganoff was quite good, but he did say the sauce was a bit waterier than he would have liked, but it tasted quite good. I chuckled as some of the Stoganoff sauce splattered around as he twirled the noodles prior to taking a bite.

We were quite full after finishing our meals. You wouldn't normally think that burgers and sandwiches with fries or a noodle dish would fill us up that much, but we were really full. We had initially planned to eat some of Marie Callender's wonderful pies for dessert, but we simply had no more room.

Our total bill including 4 soft drinks, 5 entrées, and taxes came out to $66. Not bad for tummy stuffing meals for 5. Marie Callender's is known for it's pies, but in this case, we found that the sandwiches and burgers are quite good too. I've dined at other Marie Callender's locations and the food is more or less consistently good.

Outback SteakhouseBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Prime Minister's Prime Rib
Outback Steakhouse is a national chain of steak restaurants with an Australian theme. We visited the Outback location inside the Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance. It's located in the wing between Sears and JC Penny's.

I dined there with a friend on a Saturday evening, so there was a wait of about 30 minutes. At least it's in a mall so you can wander around some of the nearby mall stores while waiting for your page. We were finally seated in a comfortable booth in the dining area. There is a pretty good sized bar area that was pretty packed. Miscellaneous Australian related decorations adorn the walls, such as Australian street signs, pictures of Koalas, boomerangs, and Abroriginal souvenirs.

Our server promptly greeted us and took our drink orders. My friend ordered the Prime Minister's Prime Rib in a 12 oz cut, medium rare. It comes with one salad or soup and one side dish. My friend chose the Caesar salad and the baked potato. I ordered the Outback Special, medium rare. It's a 9 ounce center cut sirloin. I had the fresh veggies and Caesar salad too.

Our server came back with a loaf of warm multi-grain bread and a ramekin of butter. The soft bread held over our appetites until our salads arrived. The Caesar salads were especially good. The anchovy taste was to my liking. I've eaten a lot of Caesar salads where the restaurant reduces the anchovy flavor, but I like the taste of the anchovy in the Caesar. I think it adds the right zip to the salad, and they sure have plenty of it here.

After our salads, our entrees arrived. My friend's Prime Minister's Prime Rib was cooked medium rare, as she wanted. She said it was quite tender and the au jus sauce added the right amount of taste to it. My Outback Special was seared just right. The inside was cooked a slight bit more than I would have liked, but it was fine nonetheless. It was still quite juicy and savory. It was tender, save for the tendon in the back, but that tendon comes with this cut of beef anyways. Both of us really wanted just a nice, no-frills, no-hassle steak and we found it here.

We had the Chocolate Chocolate Tower cake for dessert. It was quite a good size. The cake was definately very chocolatey. We had to take each bite with a sip of our drinks. The cake was very moist and quite dense. We were unable to finish it and ended up taking the rest of the cake home.

Our total bill was $46 for 2 steaks and dessert and tax. I've been to other Outback Steakhouses in other locations before and the food is consistently good and service quick and friendly. I'd definately recommend Outback.

TGI Friday'sBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Sizzling Triple Meat Fundido
TGI Friday's is a national chain of casual dining restaurants. We visited the one in Torrance off Hawthorne Boulevard. We went during happy hour, which is from 4 to 7pm and again from 10pm until closing. Appetizers are half off during happy hour when seated in the bar area!

We were seated immediately in a comfortable booth in the dining area, which was fairly empty, compared to the bustling bar area. TGI Friday's is decorated with all sorts of odd memorabilia from aircraft parts, steet signs, old photographs, to anything else under the sun. It tries to present a nice lively and fun atmosphere, while still being family friendly.

Our server took our drink orders and brought them to us quickly. We had already decided what we wanted. We ordered the Sizzling Triple Meat Fundido for an appetizer. One of my friends ordered the Sizzling Chicken and Shrimp and my other friend ordered the Grown Up Mac & Cheese. I ordered the Classic Sirloin (medium rare) with Lively Burgundy Sauce and Cheddar Mashed Potatoes.

The Sizzling Triple Meat Fundido appetizer arrived first. It resembles a pizza in an odd sort of way. It's served sizzling (hence the name) on a heated cast iron skillet with some warm breadsticks for dipping. I dove right in and found that it was much too hot at the moment. After a short cooling off period, we restarted on the fundido. It's very savory and full of flavor. There's the cheeses, green onions, pepperoni, bacon, and seasonings. It's very good, but probably murder on your thighs.

Our entrees came out next. My friends Grown Up Mac & Cheese has sauteed chicken breasts and sliced onions & peppers on top of elbow macaroni mixed in a creamy cheese sauce with chopped ham and bacon, sliced mushrooms and pico de gallo. He really liked it, as he always liked mac and cheese anyways. The chicken and other ingredients added too the flavor and mixed very well.

My other friend's Sizzling Chicken & Shrimp looked really good. He really liked the shrimp and said the chicken breast was flavorful, but a slight bit dry, as chicken breast tends to be. But he enjoyed it nonetheless.

My classic sirloin was pretty good. The sirloin was tender and juicy. The burgundy sauce finished up the flavor. My only complaint is that the iron skillet it was served on seemed to impart a slight metallic taste to the meat, especially when I used the knife to cut the sirloin.

We ordered the Brownie Obsession, a warm brownie covered in Ghirardelli chocolate-fudge sauce, vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce and pecans. It was very rich and delicious.

Our total bill for one appetizer, three entrees, and three soft drinks, and dessert came out to $61 with tax. Except for the slightly dry chicken and metallic taste in my sirloin, I enjoyed this dine out. I've always had consistent taste and quality at the different TGI Friday's I've dined

Shrimp and Chicken Jambalaya
The Elephant Bar in Torrance is located by Del Amo Fashion Plaza at the corner of Torrance and Hawthorne Blvds. I met my friends there after work on a weekday. We only waited about 15 minutes before we were seated.

The Elephant Bar has a Asian Jungle type theme reminiscent of being in a British jungle plantation in the late 1800s. The decor comprises of nice dark hardwoods, palm trees and palm fronds. There are plantation style ceiling fans and the carpet is tiger striped. It was a bit loud in the restaurant due to the wooden surfaces which reflect sound, and the amount of people in the restaurant at that time. There is an actual bar (hence the name Elephant Bar) in the middle of the restaurant.

Our friendly server greeted us promptly and took our drink orders. They have sandwiches and burgers on the menu, as well as Pan-Pacific dishes such as Bangkok Stir-Fried Pad Thai with Vegetables & Tofu and Kung Pao Chicken. They also have steaks and seafood cooked American style. My friends chose the Chicken & Shrimp Jambalaya, the Seafood Combo (a special limited time item) and I chose the New York Steak Sandwich, medium rare. We also chose the E-Bar “Famous” Artichoke Dip as an appetizer.

A few minutes later, the E-Bar “Famous” Artichoke Dip came out. It's served with warm tortilla chips. While it was good, I think they should have added a bit of melted cheese to the dip to make it better.

Our entrées came out after we finished the dip. My friend's seafood combo consisted of shrimp, calamari, and crab legs served in a type of bouillabaisse. He said it was very good, if a bit messy to eat. My other friend's chicken and shrimp jambalaya was quite savory. He said it was good, but not exactly what he had expected. He had expected more of a Cajun gumbo taste to it, but the entrée had more of an Asian taste to it. It's kind of difficult to explain. My New York steak sandwich was much better than expected. It's topped with fried onion strings, and served with a tomato topped with melted cheese and fries. I've experienced steak sandwiches where the steak is too thin to cook properly and ends up being well done. This sandwich had a nice thick cut of New York steak, and it was served correctly, medium rare. It was juicy and full of flavor, quite an unexpected treat!

After finishing our entrées, we ordered the Giant Ice Cream Cookie Dessert. When it arrived, it was much bigger than we had thought! It was about nine inches in diameter! We had expected something about 5-6 inches. It's basically two soft chocolate chip cookies with soft vanilla ice cream in the middle, with whipped cream and caramel and chocolate sauce drizzled on it. The cookie was nice and soft and easy to cut through with a spoon. Yummy!

Our total bill was $66, including tax and tip.

Yard HouseBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Yard House Restaurant"

Happy Hour appetizers at the Yard House!
We were at Shoreline Village in Long Beach on a weekday after work. Shoreline Village is a shopping/entertainment center on the Long Beach harbor off of Shoreline and Ocean Blvd. I was with three other friends to celebrate one of our friend's birthday at the Yard House.

There is dining outside with a harbor view at the Yard House, but we opted for inside as it started getting chilly these days. We were there for Happy Hour and were seated promptly. Since the bulk of the crowds hadn't arrived yet, service was prompt and attentive. The Yard House's decor is mainly nice rich dark woods. There's a large bar stationed in the middle of the restaurant with literally over a hundred brews on tap. Their signature drink is a yard long beer glass shaped like a beaker.

After we got our drinks, we put in our orders. A good number of appetizers are half off during Happy Hour weekdays from 3 to 6pm. We took advantage of that and ordered half off lettuce wraps, onion ring tower, pepperoni and mushroom pizza, and fried calamari. My friends ordered two Chicken Enchilada Stacks for their entrées.

Our appetizers arrived a few minutes later. The lettuce wraps are stir fried chicken and smoked tofu, pine nuts and green onions with three dipping sauces. You spoon the chicken mixture and dipping sauce onto a piece of crisp lettuce, curl up the lettuce and eat it similar to a taco. It was quite good.

The sausage and mushroom pizza appetizer was actually my entrée. In my opinion, a crust can make or break a pizza, and this crust was quite nicely textured and good.

The onion ring tower was the biggest surprise. It's a bunch of beer battered onion rings dusted with Parmesan cheese, served with chipotle and ranch dipping sauces. The cheese added a nice new dimension in taste I hadn't experienced before.

The fried calamari was good, too. There wasn't anything special or unusual about it, but it's nice to have something taste as expected.

My two friends love the Chicken Enchilada Stack, it's chicken and roasted pasilla peppers in garlic cream layered with jack cheese, fresh corn tortillas, pinto beans, tomatillo and red chile sauce. They order that EVERY time we dine at the Yard House.

For dessert, we shared the Kona Coffee Ice Cream Sundae. It's made of java chip ice cream topped with Oreo cookie crumbles, macadamia nuts and chocolate sauce. We should have ordered a second one since there was hardly any left by the time it got around to me.

Our total bill for this dine was $87 including tax. The half priced Happy Hour appetizers really helped out our bill and gave us an opportunity to try different things and...well...pig out.

We very highly recommend the Yard House Restaurant. The food, service, and ambience is consistently good at every visit, even at different locations.

Ruby'sBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Ruby's Diner"

Crabcake Sliders
Ruby's Diner is a chain of 1940's themed diners centered mostly in Southern California. We visited the Ruby's Diner on the Redondo Beach Marina. (note: Ruby's seems to have some of the best real estate, for instance, Ruby's is ON the center of the Newport Beach Pier, Huntington Beach Pier, and Seal Beach Pier.)

We arrived at 5pm for dinner, since it was early, there weren't too many people there and we didn't wait for a table. Ruby's has two dining areas, counter dining on padded red vinyl stools, or the padded red vinyl booths. All Ruby's Diners are modeled to look like 1940s diners, complete with white plastic wall paneling and a train running around tracks suspended from the ceiling. The staff also dresses the part of the 1940s diner, with the ladies wearing short red and white striped outfits, and guys wearing all white uniforms with a bow tie.

After we got our drinks, we perused the menus. They have appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, fish items, salads, and milkshakes... a LOT of milkshakes. They have simple chocolate and strawberry milkshakes, all the way to 50/50 bar milkshakes with vanilla and orange sorbert, and peanut butter and chocolate milkshakes.

Our server returned to take our orders, my friends ordered the crabcake sliders, Albacore tuna melt, Albacore tuna salad sandwich, and I ordered the bacon cheeseburger. Unfortunately we decided against the milkshakes, as they invoked a little too much guilt.

After about 15 minutes of conversation, our orders came. My friend's crabcake sliders are a limited time special menu item. It's a set of three delicately seasoned crabcakes served in King's Hawaiian rolls. It's served with a choice of salad (my friend chose Caesar) and refillable fries. My friend said the crabcakes were really good, and the sweetness of the Hawaiian rolls really added to the flavor.

My other friend chose the Albacore tuna salad sandwich with garlic fries. She said the sandwich was pretty good. The garlic fries were fantastic. The fries are tossed with salt and fresh chopped garlic. Quite potent! My friend with the Albacore tuna melt really enjoyed his sandwich too.

I had the bacon cheeseburger. It's a nice hamburger patty topped with thick slices of bacon and two slices fo Swiss cheese melted over it. My burger was really juicy and tasty. All of our sandwiches and burgers came with refillable fries, I chose Cajun seasoned fries. I found them tasty, but borderline too salty.

We had no room for dessert, so we got our bill. Including tax, it was $45.79 for the 4 entrees and one soft drink. At Ruby's you have to take the bill up to the front counter to pay.

I highly recommend Ruby's Diner. It's basically good American diner food in a nice retro atmosphere. I've been to other Ruby's locations and the food is consistently good.

Lonestar Steakhouse & SaloonBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Lonestar Steakhouse & Saloon"

The Sirloin and Lobster and the Mesquite Grilled Shrimp Dinner (back)
Lonestar Steakhouse & Saloon is a national chain of steakhouses. We went to the Long Beach location, which is on Pacific Coast Highway just south of 2nd street.  We entered the restaurant and checked in for a table. We waited about 30 minutes before being seated for dinner. The restaurant's atmosphere is quite busy, with plenty of "Texan" memorabilia, such as road signs and such. The restaurant is decked out in hard wood trim with corrugated steel siding.

Our server quickly greeted us and took our drink orders. My friends ordered the Delmonico steak, full rack of baby back ribs, steak and lobster, mesquite grilled shrimp dinner, and I ordered the fillet and rib combo. Our server brought out a basket of warm rolls and soft honey butter to our table. They were very good. I couldn't really tell if it was the honey butter or if there was some sugar baked into the rolls that made them so sweet. If I didn't have an entrée, I'd probably end up eating the rolls and butter until they kicked me out.

At the top of each hour, the music suddenly gets real loud and the servers line up and start line dancing in the middle of the restaurant and along the aisles. Some of the customers also got into the spirit and clapped along to the beat. A few of the servers danced quite well and put their hearts into it, while a few others struggled to watch their co-workers to see what steps to do next. Heh...

Afterwards, our server brought our salads or soup to us, which were included in our dinner. I really liked the house salad, which has nice green leafy lettuce, diced juicy tomatoes, red onions (I removed them...), shredded cheddar cheese, and croutons. Our server brought out our entrées to us. My friends and I noticed that the ribs are exceptionally tender and very good. We commented that these are probably the tenderest ribs we've ever had, possibly better than some other famous rib joints we've been to. This was quite an unexpected surprise actually. We found the steaks quite juicy and tasty.

My friends especially liked their sweet potatoes. They're served with soft butter and a mixture of sugar and cinnamon on the side. When mixed together, the sweet potato almost becomes a type of dessert. While this isn't Ruth Chris or Morton's of Chicago, we all agreed that the steaks, ribs, and seafood were very good and tasty, and worth the price. We paid a total of $95 before tip. That includes 5 entrées and 2 drinks.

We've been to other Lonestar locations before and the food has always been consistently good. The service was good at this location, and the atmosphere quite lively. Our surprise find of the very tender and tasty baby back ribs was quite pleasant. I very highly recommend Lonestar Steakhouse & Saloon.

Fantastic CafeBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Chili Cheese Fries and Corndog
Fantastic Cafe is a small chain of quick service restaurants in Southern California. I happened across the Fantastic Cafe location on Gaffey, just north of Channel Street. It's in an industrial area, with the 110 Freeway to the east, and adjacent to equipment rental and machine shops.

Upon entering Fantastic Cafe, there is an order counter with a large menu board. They have everything from breakfast to Mexican food, to sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, and complete dinners. I ordered a pastrami sandwich and my friend ordered a corn dog and we split a large order of chili-cheese fries. Including two drinks, our total was $13. Not a bad price.

We were given cups for our drinks and we found a nice comfy booth off to the side. There really isn't much decor. They have a few TVs hanging in the corners of the dining area tuned into the Dodger game. Looking around, a lot of people dining here, presumable before they go home, and a few families eating here too. I think in this art of Los Angeles, Fantastic Cafe (as well as other similar fast service restaurants) has become what the diners of the 1950s once were.

About 10 minutes later, a waitress brought out our food and silverware. My friend gobbled up his corn dog and started on the chili-cheese fries. The fries were nice and crisp, except where the chili and cheese oozed all over them. The chili was nice and hearty, but a bit oily. My pastrami sandwich really hit the spot. It was nice and moist, and the pastrami was shaved thin, plus it hardly had any tendons or tough sections.

A family of four could easily dine here for under $30. They have specials, including complete dinners with drinks and fries or a side salad for under $8. I've had breakfast at Fantastic Cafe before, and it's quite inexpensive yet good. Their omelets are pretty big and hearty and a good way to start the day. The morning crowd usually consists of truck drivers, construction workers, and a few white collars looking to fill up with energy to last the day. While Fantastic Cafe won't win any taste awards, it still serves pretty good and hearty food in fairly large portions. If you happen to be in the area, Fantastic Cafe is a nice place to get a decent meal at a good price.

Lucky Strike LanesBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

The lanes at Lucky Strike
Lucky Strike is a 21 and over bowling alley, sports bar, pool hall, and restaurant all rolled up into one. I went with a group of friends to the Lucky Strike at the Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance. There is a dress code, and it’s enforced by bouncers at the door.

Lucky Strike isn’t your typical bowling alley, the lights are darker and they play the latest dance tunes, like a nightclub that just happens to have a bowling alley. We reserved two lanes for two hours, but arrived earlier, so we hung out at the sports bar. I went to the equipment counter to let the staff know our party was present. Behind the bar is a section with half a dozen pool tables you can rent time at as well. The sports bar area has a long bar with bar seating, as well as some couches and tables where to lounge. There are regular tables for people to order food and eat at too. The sports bar has a large projection TV in the middle of the wall with small TVs surrounding it, displaying alternate sports events. There is even a LED ticker with sports scores and news running across the top of the TVs. We ordered a few drinks and sat at the bar chatting and watching the game. We weren’t hungry, but I took a peek at their menu as I was curious. They have a full menu of appetizers, gourmet pizzas, burgers, pasta, and desserts.

When our party was called, we went to the equipment counter to pay and receive our bowling shoes. Instead of the standard plastic seats behind the alley, there are nice comfortable couches facing each other with a big lounge table in between them. There are large projection TV screens above the pins, displaying whatever game is on, as well as smaller screens with music videos. The bowling itself is no different, except for the red pin. There is a random red pin mixed into the frames. If the pin happens to show in the #1 position, and you bowl a strike, you are awarded with a certificate for a free 2 hour, 2 lane session. You must notify a staff member to watch prior to bowling that frame.

You can order drinks and anything from the full menu delivered to the lanes. They have cocktail waitresses roaming the lanes, although it can be a wait due to the sheer number of customers ordering drinks. After 9pm, Lucky Strike turns up the music way up and lowers the lights even more than they already are.

Lucky Strike isn’t for the pure bowler who wants to get in some bowling practice. It’s for people who are looking for a lively time out at night with good food and drinks. It's not exactly cheap, but it's worth it for a fun time. It’s great for parties or just hanging out with friends.
