An August 2006 trip
to Portland by travel77
Quote: We flew in to Portland from Vancouver for a weekend break and loved it. The city has a lively yet laid-back vibe, and many of Oregon's excellent wineries are less than an hour's drive from downtown.
- Powell's Books -- With books being so easily accessible through Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Chapters, and the like, I wasn't prepared for how amazing this place is. Yes, it's huge and books are a great deal, but it also reminded me of how wonderful it is to spend time browsing among the stacks of a truly good bookstore.
- The wineries -- A short, easy drive south of the city gets you to lovely rolling countryside and tastings of fabulous pinot noirs--a very doable side trip.
Hotel | "Hilton Portland"
- Great mattress and pillows, two bottles of water daily free of charge, and nice toiletries from Crabtree and Evelyn.
- Good location--you can walk to just about anywhere in Portland's lively downtown and you are two short blocks from the light rail service (if you don't have much luggage, skip the cab ride from the airport and take the red line to Pioneer Square)
Excellent service--front desk and concierge staff were friendly and helpful. (In our first room, we could hear a constant loud noise--a malfunctioning fan? late-night construction? faulty plumbing? The staff had no explanation, but we were moved right away to a room higher up, with apologies and a complimentary breakfast for two for the hassle of packing up and moving.)
If we had been able to get a better deal on the room, we'd have given this hotel a "highly recommended". (I've seen reviewers on the net posting rates of less than $100/night for a room here--clearly it's worth shopping around.)
