If you happen to be in Sofia then these are the things you shouldn't miss:

-Alexander Nevsky Cathedral built in 19th century, which dominates the skyline of central Sofia. Be sure to come inside to admire its beautiful decorations and icons. To get even more out of it try visiting on a Sunday morning when the Holy Liturgy (Mass) is normally celebrated.

-The National Palace of Culture (Nacionalen Dvorets na Kultutra), a massive complex, just south of the city centre. The NDK, as the locals call it features numerous cafes, shops and the National Railway (Zheleznitsa) reservation office, which is very helpful if planning a train journey. NDK is also is a popular meeting spot for the local youngsters and is an excellent place for people-watching.

-National History Museum (Nacionalen Istoricheski Musei) in the Boyana part of Sofia. Features a very impressive collection of nearly everything related to Bulgarian history. The museum is housed in the Boyana residence of Toodor Zhivkov, the last communist leader of Bulgaria. The complex strikes the visitor with its size and a very solid Stalinist architecture. Although it is quite a trip from the city centre, a visit there is definitely worth is if history is one of your interests.

-The Holy Sedmochisleniki Cathedral and other churches. Most of them are within an easy walking distance from each other and are of a high interest because of their very unusual style. Do also visit the St George (Sveti Georgi) Rotunda, engulfed by the Presidency / Sheraton Balkan Hotel Building (walk through the arch on the left of the entrance in the the Presidency.
