Key Largo with the family 2006

Overview

Quote:
We scheduled this trip as the 'in between' stop between the Fort Lauderdale are and Key West. With a family (since children are not going to usually get into the R&R aspect of the area)...this is probably just a two to three day stop rather than a destination on its own. The experiences are expensive but the photos and memories are well worth it...the sea lion swim is a really unique and fun!!!Quick Tips: The major attractions are the swim with the dolphin locations and the John Pennecamp coral reef park. The swim with the dolphin experiences are pricey...if you want the best deal—go to Discovery Cove for the same money and make a full day of it! There are many private charters available ...Read More

Anchorage Resort and Yacht Club 107800 Overseas HighwayKey Largo, FL , 33037 , USA Phone: 305/451-0500 This resort is located right on the US 1 highway as soon as you cross the draw bridge into Key Largo. When we pulled up I was highly disappointed—from the outside the building looks like it is going to be a ‘dump’. This first impression is as wrong as you can get , the rooms which are all one bedroom units are clean and reasonable, and there were no complaints on the accommodations at all. There is a king-size bed in the bedroom, a sofa bed in the living room and a full, well equipped kitchen. Each unit has a waterside view which is on the bay side with a nice slow pace o...Read More

Captain Shoh’s Located right on the north side of US 1 in Key Largo is what appears to be an interesting restaurant with a lot of neon signs and items which you notice from the highway, displaying a wide variety of fish and beer. Having written lots of reviews I never have written a review with the intent to warn travels to avoid the place—this is my warning—DON’T GO TO Captain Shons. There were 8 in our party, I ordered a deep fried item (red snapper) per the recommendation of the waitress. The others in my party ordered non-fried item. When the item arrived it was soft and soggy, I broke a piece in half and it had obviously been refried—resulting in a soggy wet appearanc...Read More

We ate there on two separate occasions and have wonderful fresh fish. Apparently the local delicacy is the Hogfish which they prepared as our waiter recommended and it was excellent. The menu had a wide variety of items and with our large group we of course had some ‘no fish’ individuals and there were stellar choices for them. The service was good and the atmosphere was excelle...Read More

John Pennecamp Glass Bottom Boat tripThe John Pennecamp Park has a really exceptional glass bottom boat named, Spirit of Pennekamp. Over the years I have been on many glass bottom boat tours and have found them to be all about the same - --the glass is usually foggy and the views are present but not stellar. Well, the boat at John Pennecamp is head and shoulders above anything comparable I have been on prior. The view is positively clear, there is no fogging nor crud on the glass (which is the rule rather than the exception on other glass bottom boats). You take a ride out to some shallow reef areas and the views are very nice in deed. The boat is 65 feet long and is a h...Read More

Upon your arrival you are to fill out some forms and wait in the gift shop area until the specific time you are scheduled for your swim. You must make reservations prior to your arrival and according to the company – most days are fully booked. You are taken in a group of about 20 people for an orientation…this involves telling you about what to expect from your experience and general information about dolphins and specific information about their dolphins. They have two different experiences the ‘natural swim’ and the ‘structured swim…both experiences occur in the same pens at different times. The natural swim is just that—you wear a snorkel and mask a...Read More

Theater of the SeaLocated at mile marker 84.5 in Islamorada, Florida Keys http://www.theaterofthesea.com/TEL 305.664.2431 This is about 30-40 minutes south of Key Largo on US 1. Having chose another location for the dolphin swim, I chose Theater of the Sea for the Sea Lion Swim. This was something none of us had ever experienced before and it was really a lot of fun!!! It is a very unique experience which starts out with about a half hour explanation session followed by about 30 minutes of time with a sea lion. It is very hands on and interactive. It was very fun feeling this animal ...the maximum size of a group is 6 so since we had 8 we did it in two sessions...Read More

John Pennecamp snorkeling tripMile marker 102.5 Overseas highwayKey Largo, FLJohn Pennecamp state park is the Key Largo Coral reef park. It is a wonderful destination with many many choices as to how to see it. The coral reefs are all far out and require boat transportation to reach the desired areas. These trips are about 2 - 2 ½ hours...just over an hour of that is our on the reef. The views to see are well worth it. The crew is very helpful and this is not a state company so they do allow tips—so remember to take a little cash with your minimal belongings you’ll need for the trip. If you are looking to see the Jesus—this trip doesn’t get yo...Read More
