After a hot and stressful work week, my mom and I headed to the Market to kick off the weekend. We decided on Fat Tuesdays, a New Orleans-style restaurant offering Cajun Creole and contemporary dishes in yet another of the Byward Market’s heritage buildings. Any time I pass by this restaurant, the interior and patio are packed, so we both thought it would be a great choice. When we arrived at the restaurant, we still had a choice of a table on the patio or inside. We chose the patio and the hostess promptly showed us to a table for two along the old stone wall just out of the sun. The shade was perfect since the hot evening sun was beating ...Read More

My family is divided on the issue of seafood with my dad and me falling clearly on the side of loving it and my mom and sister going the opposite direction. So when my dad comes to town on business, The Fish Market is a sure bet. Upon entering the corner door on our first visit (when my mom decided to humour us by coming along for fish and seafood) we were a bit confused as there are 3 restaurants in this building. The Fish Market is located on the main level and is clearly distinguished by its lobster tank. The restaurant is just as clearly decorated in a nautical/wharf theme. We have always taken advantage of the Early...Read More

Finding new restaurants to eat at when my parents come to visit has become a challenge. So, on my mom’s latest trip to Ottawa we decided to head to Foundation, a restaurant my parents had previously visited for lunch but not supper.Upon entering and heading down the stairs, we were greeted by the hostess who asked if we had reservations. We said no. She took a look at her list and asked if we would be finished by 9 pm. My mom and I looked at each other thinking "of course", since it was only 6 pm. The restaurant was empty except for one large group. We had a good laugh about this as the evening went on consideri...Read More

On my frequent walks past The Tea Party I wistfully looked at the chalkboard sign outside advertising daily High Tea. My schedule never seemed to work with that of my friends so when my mom visited she and I decided we would give it a try.The Tea Party, located in an historic red brick home in the Byward Market, offers a quiet and laid back atmosphere for those looking for an alternative to the regular coffee shop. The seating area is small, offering just a handful of tables, but the sofa, fireplace and plants make it feel more like a funky living room than a tearoom. My mom and I grabbed a table and then headed to the counter to order High Tea. High Tea is offered daily ...Read More

Looking for a new restaurant to visit on my parents' most recent trip to Ottawa, we chose Azteca based on a recommendation. I was told Azteca offered the most authentic Mexican food in Ottawa. The small store front gave Azteca the appearance of a cozy and intimate place to enjoy a meal. I wondered how the restaurant could operate with just a handful of tables. When we entered the restaurant, we immediately noticed the bright cobalt blue-and-yellow walls, decorative tiles, and wooden tables decorated with copper plates and cloth napkins in matching blue and yellow. We were asked if we wanted to sit downstairs or upstairs. Ah - the m...Read More
