Nashville: An Extraordinary American Experience

Overview

Quote:
I had the (un?)fortunate experience of taking a group of high school students to Nashville. This trip prefaced a course on American Culture and Society. In many respects, Nashville is a great place to start for a true understanding of American Culture. Its rich ethnic history, musical tradition and culinary excellence distinguish this city a true American destination. From museums to concerts, America's pulse can be felt beating on the streets of this historic city.Quick Tips: Plan this trip before leaving. There is much to do there. Make a plan so that you can choose which sites and museums you see. My advice would be to take a short trip to this destination. A weekend should work. ...Read More

Take a lesson in Spicy at this Nashville eatery. There are four levels of spice to choose from on delicious and well bbq-ed chicken. Its a bit daring to start at the top, but how often are you in Nashville? That spicy/burnt tongue won't last forever! Each plate comes with slaw and beans, a real life saver to quell the heat. Its a great slice of local BBQ. The floors take you back in time, but the fried chicken is fresh. Trust me. Just a quick warning: Consider this a personal qualifier from a professed fan of spice - mild is plenty hot for me. Don't be fooled by the title. Also, it gets crowded, so try to hit it on an off, non meal period if you are on a tight schedule. ...Read More

Monell's

Restaurant

Monell's is southern food. If you need to ask what southern food is, then you need to visit Monell's. It is simple down-home restaurant that offers large, often friend and cheap food cooked in a traditional southern manner. The sign stating "No Cellular Phones" speaks to the tradition in this Nashville classic restaurant. My meal included corn bread, biscuits and fried chicken. While seemingly common food, Monell's serves it up like you have never had before. If you had a southern Grandmother, she would have cooked like this. Except your Grandma was never this friendly. The service at Monell's is truly second to none. Be sure to top it off with the Corn Pudding. Yes, the Corn Pudding. Trust...Read More

Country music is considered by many to be America's Music. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum is not just a glorification of the musics stars and icons, it is a glimpse into the history of a genre that has influenced so much of American culture. In my experience, I have found this stop an essential one while in Nashville. The city itself is influenced heavily by the music, so much so that to explore the city without an appreciation of that music's history is to not truly experience Nashville. It is important to note that this site is not just for fans of the music. Because of the music's role in culture and life (in Nashville and the rest of the country) this museum is a great archi...Read More
