Call of the Wild- that is the name of the food court at the Minnesota Zoo. This is the first zoo I have ever been to that actually had a food court. Literally, a food court with several different places to choose from. It looked like a mall food court. It was indoor and air-conditioned with tons of sitting room and bathrooms. This zoo had something all too familiar to me and very surprising to see in the zoo. Being from a small town in the middle of nowhere (well almost) and having an Ag College I am no stranger to the farm animals. The Minnesota Zoo had a unique and fascinating farm area. I was actually quite impressed even though this was something I was very familiar with. There was a whole section dedicated to farm life and farm animals with a petting zoo and many shows, explanations and exhibits to view.

When you first begin your way to the farm area, you will hit an old barn with silos and a windmill. The barn had an old grain elevator and was the stop for a tractor ride into the family fun farm if you choose not to walk. Once you get down to the farm, you will start to see horses and some cows out in a field. The next thing you will be able to do and see are goats. They had several goats, of all sizes and you could pet them and feed them. The goats were a lot of fun. I have a 1-½ year old and he loved it. They goats are gentle and very friendly. After petting and feeding the goats we headed to the bathrooms to clean up and wash our hands in this beautiful white house that also had a restaurant in it.

After cleaning up and taking a few family pictures we continues thought the farm. They had a dairy barn with about 10 different cows; each cow had a name and the type of cow out on a sign where you could see it. This was great so you could tell what you were looking at. There was also a milking demonstration that was going on and a section that showed you what things come from a cow and from what parts of the cow. It was very educational and great for the kids.

The next place we went into was the pigs. It was basically set up just like the cows, where you could see what type of cow it was and its name. You could also pet the pigs if you wished. The pigs also had some informational stuff as well. The pigs were kind of stinky.

After finishing up with the pigs we headed out of the family fun farm and back to see the rest of the zoo. The family fun farm is a great place to let the kids run and have some fun and also learn a few things. It is a place where the parents can rest and take a break and just watch the kids have a blast.

The IMAX is a 3-D movie theater that has huge screens. This IMAX Theater is located at the zoo but is not really part of the zoo. You have to pay for is separately but any one can go. They do have some combination packages that include the IMAX and the zoo. The IMAX shows a variety of movies and they are for all ages. The prices for traditional IMAX films: $9 adult, $7 children (3-12) & seniors (65+), and for special engagement Hollywood IMAX DMR films: $14 adult, $12 children (3-12) & seniors (65+). Playgrounds

There are at least 4 play areas through out the zoo. Two of them are playgrounds with swing, slides, and forts for the kids. I found this to be a great break for our little boy since the rest of the time he was in the stroller being pusher around. When we got to the play grounds are little boy was able to go play with other kids and give us a chance to rest our legs and feet. The playgrounds had lots of kids, but never too many for the kids to have a good time.

The other two areas that kids could play on were kind of education and a neat idea to show kids how some of the animals live. The first was an underground tunnel area by the Meer cats. This game the kids somewhere to play for a minute or two and then also see how the meer cats live and move around and where they make there homes. The other area that was like this was in a sand pit there was a huge ant farm that the kids could run through and crawl out.

If you have kids you understand the need for a break for both you and the kids. This was a great zoo that accommodated those things. I really enjoyed having a place for my son to run and take a break from riding.
