Michigan - It's pronounced 'PAST-EE'

A June 2006 trip to Norristown by MalervyC

Quote: My cousin was getting married in Copper Harbor, MI. I've never been to Michigan and had no idea how beautiful it is. We had quite a few stops along the way, including Saginaw, MI, Mackinac Island, MI, and Cleveland, OH.

My cousin had her reception at the lodge and it was very nice. The hall isn't very large, but then again there weren't many of us. Nice bar, small dance floor and the food was very impressive. We also went to the main lodge a few times for breakfast which was at a fair price. There is golf available right outside of the smaller lodges for those who like the sport. The guest lodges were very quaint. Lots of wood available for the fireplaces, but we found our room quite comfortable. At night we would leave all the windows open and get the cross breeze; very good sleeping weather. I have never seen so many stars as I did at night up here. I would recommend this place to anyone who is really looking to...Read More

We drove down from the UP looking for a nice place to stay in Mackinaw City. Our AAA tour book offered $30 off if you stayed at the Best Western. Wow - I can't tell you how surprised we were with the hotel and rooms. This place is nice, it's right on Lake Huron overlooking the water, the bridge, and Mackinaw Island. There's a pool and lots of parking, centrally located to the ferries and the middle of town for shopping.

Great Lakes

Story/Tip

Throughout this trip, I was able to see 4 of the 5 Great Lakes: Michigan, Huron, Superior, and Erie. I saw Michigan when I went to Chicago and was completely blown away by how a lake can look like the ocean. Seeing it while crossing over the Mackinac Bridge on my left, and Lake Huron on my right was an amazing experience. I can now say I have been in two places at once!! I spend the most time around Lake Superior which is where Copper Harbor, MI lies. The views there are so incredible with the pines trees right next to the water...truly what one would think of when imagining fishing by a lake. I saw Erie when we went to Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. So in all, 4 of out 5 ain't bad...and ...Read More

What is a Pasty???

Story/Tip

Quote:
I'm from Philadelphia, and when people down here see the word 'pasty' they think of the small piece of cloth (or adhesive) that covers an tiny area on a woman's breast. So needless to say, when we were in the UP of Michigan and saw signs for 'Meat filled Pasties' we got a bit concerned. After betting with my uncle over what a pasty actually was, we decided to go out on a limb and ask one of the locals at a restaurant off Route 2 (actually, it was like, the only restaurant off route 2). As the word left my lips, she shook her head at me in dissappointment... "No, no, no... it's called a past-ee, and they are filled with meat and potatoes, almost like a pot-pie." Relief - no one was putting ground meat ...Read More
