There is much to do in Killarney. There are tours of the Lakes of Killarney, the Gap of Dunloe as well as others. The are many shops and pubs and walking the streets of Killarney is enough to keep you busy for days. The streets are lined with small shops and businesses, most of which have flower boxes above the doors and at the windows that were overflowing with bright flowers. The green of Ireland certainly showed itself in this sweet little town. In the evenings the pubs are full of people of all ages singing and drinking. Once you walk in the door, you are treated as a regular regardless if you have ever been there or not. Everybody is Irish once the singing and drinking begins.Quick Tips:...Read More

As you walk down the main street of Killarney it is hard to resist stepping into Hannigan's. The doorway is graced with a cascade of flowering lavender petunias and the laughter from inside is contagious. Hannigan's is a typical Irish pub. The old world charm is everywhere with the rough beams and charming rustic furniture. They serve food which is traditional Irish fare. I had the stew and it was delicious. The main focus after dark is the bar. There was a band and before long the crowd was not only singing along, it was taking over the stage. Many folks got up to the microphone and started singing their versions of Irish tunes. When you go to Hannigan's at night you are instantly a "...Read More

This was truly an adventure and frankly more than we bargained for. We signed up for the boat tour of the Lakes of Killarney and had it in our minds that we were going to be on a small, but enclosed boat with all the amenities. When the bus dropped us off at the dock we saw a very small fishing boat (pictured below) much like a wooden row boat with a motor. We were still not alarmed because we were sure the boat we would be riding was still to come, well it wasn't. This was our boat! The day was a rainy misty one so we were pretty chilly before it was all over with but it still was an incredible ride. The views were stunning as we tooled around the lakes of Killarney. As we passed under an abandoned b...Read More

Since Killarney is a popular tourist location there are many shops that cater to the visitors. The shops are small with brightly colored paint and flowers in boxes over the doors and in the windows. As seen in the picture below, even the hardware store was charming. The shops carried all the Irish goods, some with fine wools, Waterford and other types of fine Irish crystal, beautiful silver jewelry in typical celtic styles and laces. I was concerned that the prices would be inflated because it is a tourist town but they were not. I purchased a beautiful handmade wool sweater for about $30 US and a lovely pin for my mother. The shop keepers were very friendly and helpful. Be sure to show your passport ...Read More

The Gap of Dunloe was a great adventure. It is part of the National Park. You had a choice of riding horseback, walking, or riding in a jaunting car. It was a little rainy the day we took the trip through the Gap of Dunloe so choose the jaunting car and I am very glad we did. It is a very long walk mostly downhill and for younger more fit travelers it would be a nice hike; it would have not been a good idea for me! Besides saving my poor old body from the walk, the jaunting cars were a lot of fun. It is a small 2-wheeled cart that holds 3 people and is pulled by one horse. The scenery through the Gap of Dunloe is exquisite. I see why Ireland is known for its emerald beauty. We passed...Read More

Train ride to Killarney

Story/Tip

We took the train in from Dublin to Killarney. The train ride cost about $40 US roundtrip. The cars held about 35 people and we were seated in "booth" type tables. The train ride itself was an experience. There was a "hen party" on board going to Killarney for the weekend. I found out that this is a popular term for a pre-wedding party for women. The bride to be and about 15 of her friends were on board. They were certainly out for a weekend blow out which clearly started the minute the train left the Dublin station. There was a great deal of drinking, singing and fun on the train and we were entertained quite well on our voyage to Killarney. The country side on the way was exquisite. We passed ...Read More
