Namibia desert

Overview

Fish River Canyon Photo, Namibia, Africa
Quote:
Namibia is one of the most exciting countries in the world. This desert land is still pure and preserved from men's madness. South Namibia is really a fantastic mineral world inhabited by rare san people and elephant desert. Three wonderful national parks would make you fall in love with this wilderness: Sesriem dunes, Fish river canyon and Namib Naukluft. In these dry lands where rains come every 7 or 8 years, the water is more precious than gold. Some animal species try to survive in this hostile world; you could spot jackals, zebras, wild horses, kudus, gemsboks, ostriches and if you are especially lucky the desert's elephant. You could reach these areas from Windhoek by the main road that leads to...Read More

Sesriem

Hotel

Quote:
Facilities at Sesriem consist of a number of shady camp sites laid out under huge camel thorn trees. Each camp sites has its own fireplace and tap, while some camp sites are encircled by a stone wall. Two small ablution blocks, as well as scullery facilities, are provided. A small pool also remains. There are only 10 camp sites, so you should book in advance. If not, you could ask to warden the authorisation to put your tent in the neighbouring area.

Solitaire

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Quote:
Solitaire is a pretty and tiny "one building " village, a real oasis in the desert. In the middle of nowhere, its sight often amazes the visitor. The single house, held by a white solid Zimbabwean with the Scottish look, makes also grocer's shop, bar and fuel deposit. A glass shelter encloses a scorpion and two vipers. The owner is a rude man whose origins come from the island Skye in Scotland. Inside you could enjoy many pictures and even a skin of leopards. He uses to raise young leopards before entrusting them to reserves and game parks. Its many scars show the links of affection received from its cat-like. Our man does not dry up praises towards " the phantom of the night " which feels you with ki...Read More

Trekking in Fish river canyon

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction

watching wildlife Photo, Namibia, Africa
Quote:
Hiking in the largest African canyon (and the second of the world after great Colorado canyon) is a rare privilege. The site is imposing; Fish River curves at the bottom of broad deep pit of more than 500m. The reservation near the Namibian ministry of the wildlife is compulsory and the waiting list is quite long. On the other hand peace is assured because only a single group is authorised on the trail per day. Although according to the dry bed of the river, water is the biggest problem to be solved. A dam controls the river and in southern winter only some more or less salubrious water holes remain. The ground is difficult, sand succeeds fields huge stones. Except the reeds the fuel is rare, a stove ...Read More

Quiver trees forest

Attraction

quiver tree Photo, Namibia, Africa
Quote:
In Southern Namibia you could observe singular trees, the quivers trees (or Kokerbaum) thus named because of their right and massive trunk and of their foliage in range like tens of arrows. A ten-year-old child whom you would ask to draw a tree would not represent other things, only this endemic plant. The forest is not frankly one, considering the trees are really sparse. Nevertheless this place gathers the most beautiful concentration of quiver trees of the area. The vegetation grown among the rock slopes are called kopjes. These large angular stones seem to come from a cubist factory. This geometrical forest is located on the B1 road between Grunau and Keetmanshoop. The entry is about $2.

Dune 45 Photo, Namibia, Africa
Quote:
The Namib Naukluft Park is the largest of Namibia. The Namib is the oldest desert in the world; it is famous for their wonderful red dunes. About 45 km west of the Sesriem campsite is one of the most amazing features of Namib, a huge dune of red sand appears. The dune 45 which takes its name from its distance from Sesriem. Although it is not the highest dune in this area, it is the most photographed dunes because of its convenient proximity to the road. Dune 45 is a typical star dune and rises to over 170 metres above the valley floor. About 15 km further a parking area for sedan cars is reached. The remaining 5-km to Sossusvlei is negotiable by 4 WD only. Sossusvlei, a large white clay pan cont...Read More

Fish River Canyon

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction

Fish River Canyon Photo, Namibia, Africa
Quote:
Fish river canyon is the deepest in Africa and the second largest in the world after the great Colorado canyon. The canyon stretches for 160 km, the most spectacular section is 56 km long. Several viewpoints along the western rim of the canyon afford visitors splendid vistas of dramatic canyon. The canyon is 500 m deep. The colours are superb, especially early in the morning. The canyon contains only a modest river named the Fish river which ends in the huge Orange river. Even if you are not a trekker you could go down in the heart of the canyon from the main viewpoint. It takes about 2½ hours to go down and up. The slopes are sharp; be careful.
