Imagine the Wisconsin Dells crossed with a dusty African village, and you get Livingstone (only without all the Illinois tourists). A peculiar mix of natural wonders, overpriced adrenaline-inducing activity options and very poor people in a nation where the life expectancy has plummeted to only 32! due to the AIDS epidemic.Victoria Falls, known in the native language as Mosi-oa-Tunya (or 'Smoke That Thunders')really lives up to its reputation as a natural wonder of the world, and lives up to the thundering noise level implied in its old name.Victoria Falls first became known to the European world when it was discovered and named by the famous explorer, Dr. David Livingstone...Read More

Fawlty Towers

Hotel

Quote:
Fawlty Towers it the most popular backpacker/youth hostel in Livingstone. It's arranged in a U shape around a mostly pleasant central garden courtyard with a small swimming pool.It has dorm rooms as well as 4-person rooms with ensuite toilet, sink, & shower. Our family of four had one of these rooms and they are quite small (4x4 meters) with two sets of bunk beds with mosquito nets. Kind of dirty and shabby. Nothing to make you want to spend any extra time in your room at all. That said, why would anyone want to stay here? The main reason is price, but also the ambiance of a fun backpacker hangout might attract you also. There's a TV lounge with a pool table adjacent to the recepti...Read More

Hungry Lion

Restaurant

Quote:
This is a cheap fried chicken and french fries place on a main corner in downtown Livingstone. It was pretty bad. In our defense, it was lunchtime and we were hungry and hot and just wanted something inexpensive to eat and it was right there.Eating here did provide one of the more poignant moments of our trip. We were eating at an outside table, and being sort of picky because the chicken wasn't very good, not eating the skin, that sort of thing. As we were finishing up and stacking up our styrofoam boxes to throw them away, a young boy came up and asked if he could have them. We gave them to him of course, and then a bit later saw him and has friend gladly eating our leftovers. Definit...Read More

Hippo's Restaurant

Restaurant | "The Hippo"

Quote:
The Hippo restaurant has an entrance from the main courtyard of the Fawlty Towers youth hostel, but it seemed pretty much independent of the hostel. It is mostly a bar and grill kind of place, with a nice atmosphere. The food was OK -- we mostly ordered hamburgers, which were sort of slightly sub-par ground beef, I thought. A burger and chips was something like US$8. This was the best restaurant we ate at, but that isn't really saying much at all as we didn't find much good food in our two days in Livingstone. No credit cards accepted. It was a rather cool evening when we were there. To warm the place up, some workers brought in big open buckets of red-hot charcoal and sat them a...Read More

Everywhere that books activities around Victoria Falls will offer a helicopter ride over the falls. It's really a great thrill to see them from the air and you get great views of the whole falls, a perspective you can't really get from the ground. We were picked up from our hotel and taken to the helicopter landing strip outside of Livingstone. This place also offered ultralight airplane flights over the falls which looked like a lot of fun also. The helicopter will take up to 5 at a time, while the ultralight is just one passenger at a time. But the ultralight flight was $10 cheaper than the helicopter ride. They won't let you take your own camera on the ultralight, citing safety concern...Read More

Other than the time-tested phrase "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" (which I believe I personally learned at an early age from a Bugs Bunny cartoon), and the fact that the town of Livingstone was named after him, I confess I didn't know a whole lot about Dr. David Livingstone before coming here. The Livingstone Museum is a great place to correct such ignorance. Starting as a medical doctor and missionary, Livingstone became world famous, the best-known African explorer of the Victorian era. Besides discovering (for Europeans) Victoria Falls, he was also the first European to cross the continent of Africa from Atlantic to Indian ocean. The museum explains some details of his life and exp...Read More

Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park Photo, Victoria Falls, Zambia
Quote:
Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park includes a game reserve along the Zambezi river near Victoria Falls. You can see all of Zambia's white rhino here (only 2 of them, they used to have 5, but 3 died), and some giraffes, zebras, a few antelope species, and other animals. This was the first game park we visited in all of Africa, so we enjoyed it at the time, but in retrospect, there wasn't that much game there and the game drive was overpriced (compared with other drives in other countries we did later in our trip) at $40/person. Still, we had a close encounter with the rhino which was very enjoyable. We had originally booked a game walk with this tour operator through our hostel. However after t...Read More

There should be one recommendation category higher than "Very Highly Recommended" called "You have to see this once in your lifetime" and Victoria Falls is one such place. The Smoke that Thunders, "Mosi Oa Tunya", Victoria Falls, the seventh wonder of the world,... all these wonderful names for the world's widest waterfalls. The falls, of course, are the reason we come to this remote part of the world. And it is a truly fantastic experience. You don't just see Victoria Falls, you experience them by getting soaked from their mist and hearing the roar of all that water crashing down 100 meters to the floor of the gorge. Victoria Falls are on the Zambezi river, between the countries of Zam...Read More
