Taxi's are the best way to get around once you get settled. Initially, hire a private driver to give you a day or two tour around Rome and see the sights. Angelo Amorico is the best in Rome. You must visit this at night when it is aglow with lights. Take a cab and ask him to park in an alley and wait for you. A prepaid tip will do the trick.
