Alex and his cousin Julia are both are 12-year-olds. They have been companions since the cradle, so we felt it would be a good match for a 4-day weekend. We also planned to meet up with guides kjlouden and dhough. Karen and I have been trying to arrange this meeting for what seems like years. The timing seemed perfect so we gave it a go. No one could have predicted the horrible heat and humidity that we had to face. It’s August, I expected warm but this went way beyond that. Philadelphia Zoo- billed as the nations first zoo this is actually a great way to entertain children of any age. The temperature was daunting to be sure but we spent as much time as possible visiting the ind...Read More

We have stayed twice at this hotel. Both times I won an online auction for a very low price, under $80 complete. Parking is at the convention garage next door and is $20 a day. You can pay for it at the hotel and they will validate your ticket.Since we had Julia and Alex, I thought it might be nice if we had a suite. I called the hotel and asked if I could upgrade, and they said sure, so they upgraded us: cost--nothing. Yes, I was surprised too, but it had to do with the fact that we had prepaid and they had no idea how much we had paid. The staff was always cordial and helpful. If you are lucky enough to hit the right time in the afternoon, there will be free warm cookies, but it is a ...Read More

Cosi is one of my very favorite restaurants. There is one in Connecticut about 20 miles from my house. Imagine how happy I was to find that there are several of them in Philadelphia. Alex and Julia had never been there and one of the stops on the Trolley Works is South Street, which ended up being right in front of Cosi, seemed like destiny to me.Cosi is a franchised sandwich shop but very unlike Subway or Quiznos. They offer bagels and pastry for breakfast, salads and sandwiches for lunch, and pizza and all the rest for dinner. My favorite meal is really a dinner appetizer. It is a hunk of Brie served with strawberries and grapes and Cosi Bread. It is served on a wooden board. They do ...Read More

If you like your waitress' dressed in overalls, and I have to admit that it was much more attractive on some of them than on others, and you like your portions huge and your food fresh then you will be in culinary nirvana at the Down Home Diner.Every effort has been made to provide the quintessential diner experience. Chrome and vinyl predominate and the counter has swivel stools. The food offerings run the gamut from Granny’s meatloaf and fried chicken to a wide assortment of burgers with toppings a varied as fried onions, grilled mushrooms, avocados, and vermont cheddar cheese and for something different a salmon, turkey or veggie burger. They were offering three soups the Friday we were...Read More

I have to admit to being a Hard Rock Café junky. If there is one in town I am very liable to visit. Alex had been to a Hard Rock with us before but not Julia. 12-year-olds are notoriously finicky eaters and I was pretty sure that I could find a burger and fries that both of them would be willing to eat. Before we even got into the restaurant we spent about a half hour in the gift shop finding T-shirts for them to take home. What finally transpired makes me smile even today. They both ended up picking the same shirt, brown with a white guitar on the whole front, very cute and I think it was very telling about them that even though they are just cousins, not siblings, their tastes are very similar. I wi...Read More

For $39, you get to visit six of the cities attractions over a 9-day period. This is the adult price; the youth price (ages 3-11) is $24. This is one of the biggest bargains in town. You can start your visit by taking the Trolley Works Tour. This is a $23 value. You can ride around in one of the open-air trolleys or an open-top double-decker bus. The trolley has 23 stops through out the city. Luckily, most of them are also on the city pass. The Philadelphia Zoo is the exception, being outside the tour. It is also $17. So, as you can see, if you only do these two things, you have paid for your pass. The city pass is an especially good buy if you are traveling with chil...Read More

Kids and dinosaurs, it’s a no brainer. The Academy was one of the coupons in our City Pass Book and both the kids decided that they wanted to visit there so it was a double attraction. My first observation of the museum was a little disappointing. You enter into a large lobby with an entrance /information desk. There is a store off on your left and on the right there is a large room, two stories high with mostly casts of dinosaur bones. This was not going to keep two twelve year olds occupied and entertained for more than about a minute. I underestimated their ability to be entertained. Each exhibit had a button you push to tell you the name of the dinosaur, after 15 pushes each, they were entert...Read More

I’ll bet you can’t guess what the price of Lights of Liberty is... okay, it’s $17.76. Fitting I guess, but don’t jump in and pay that price. You can get a 10% discount with AAA, and make sure you check their website to see if they are having a special, which they do on certain days. Also, if you invest in a Philadelphia Entertainment Book, there is a two-for-one coupon. You will want to do any of the above, because frankly, for adults, this is definitely overpriced. You can reserve your tickets in advance at www.lightsofliberty.org, and I recommend you do at least several weeks in advance. Don’t get me wrong--it is entertaining in a over-the-top kind of way. You get to wear headphones and ...Read More

Let me begin by admitting I am not a fan of zoos. I’m sure then the question of why I would visit here is bound to come up. Grandchildren, it is really the only explanation. Being me, I was rather surprised what it cost to park at the zoo. One would think that since we have to pay entrance that would be enough, but I would be wrong, it is $10. Parking is also at quite a distance so be prepared to walk a good deal before you even get into the zoo. There are handicap lots closer and I imagine if you get there when the zoo opens you might be able to park a bit closer than where we ended up.Luckily I had my Philadelphia Pass which gave us all free entrance to the zoo. This is a $...Read More
