I accompanied my husband to the European Summer Conference of the UK Council for Graduate Education, which was held in Florence, to discuss post-graduate education in Europe. There were participants not only from EU member countries, but also from places as far away as USA, Australia and New Zealand! The conference took place in the facilities of the European University Institute, an EU organisation with international reputation for its postgraduate and post-doctoral programmes. The EUI is based in La Badia Fiesolana, the ancient Abbey of Fiesole, which was formerly a Benedictine Monastery with connections to the Medici dynasty and the Vatican, now splendidly restored on the green hills over...Read More

We did not stay in the hotels recommended by the conference organizers, but in one we found ourselves on the Internet. Privilege was a small hotel (20 rooms), with elegant furnishings and charming family atmosphere. The hotel building dates back to the 18th century and is on the right bank of the Arno River, opposite the hill of Michelangelo Square. It is a three-star hotel, but felt and looked more like a four! Barbara and Emanuele Toccafondi were always cordial and helpful and they made sure our stay was a most pleasant one! Rooms were comfortable, with windows facing the river, but insulation was good, so outside noises could not be heard inside. Rooms offered the comfort of air-condition...Read More

My husband’s conference had its reception and conference dinner at Le Cantine di Greve Wine Cellars in the Chianti area. Participants were taken to the cellar in two buses and the ride took over an hour, as there was much traffic leaving Florence. We all enjoyed the ride, as it was still daylight and we were passing through typical Tuscany country. Le Cantine di Greve has a very big locale and they had many tables that could sit six. Everyone was given a computerised card to sample the wines, and they boast of having 140 different ones to taste! One inserts the card and the machine dispensed shots of the wines of one’s choosing, deducting money from the card, depending on the quality of the wine selec...Read More

Mrs. Toccafondi, in the hotel, told us about a Neapolitan music concert that was to be held that evening in a nearby church. We noted the directions, walked there, and discovered that the concert would not be till later that evening, so we went looking around for a restaurant to have dinner in the meantime. We studied many menus as we went along and eventually settled for a restaurant that had some tables to sit outside and many visitors inside too. The place was small, but seemed well organised and both the waiter and waitress were friendly and helpful. I ordered seafood spaghetti, while my husband had some gnocchi with prawns, and we accompanied the meal with a bottle of white wine. We now live in a...Read More

It was a very warm day, so I thought the best place to be would be near the river across our hotel. I walked along the promenade and I could see that locals seemed to be affected just as affected by the heat as I was! I saw a couple of young men taking their kayak down to the river to do some rowing and another doing some fishing right in the middle of the running water, searching for his weekend lunch perhaps! One could still hear the sounds of the Florence motorcycles on the streets, but at least there was a breeze and views were pleasant and relaxing, as it was a sunny day. I found a few sights on the way that made me smile, like a monument with a pointing gun ready to shoot and also what...Read More

We saw an advertisement for a Leonardo da Vinci exhibition, so we went to the History of Science Museum to see it, but unfortunately there was a long queue of people there who had the same idea as we had! We did not get to see the exhibition we wanted, but at least we had the chance to see one about agricultural machinery that was being held outside. There were many new and old-fashioned tractors and machines there, as well as statues and sculptures. We also found some locals, dressed in typical dresses, who were giving out beautiful biscuits with almonds in them. They also gave us a cup of vino santo (sweet wine) to drink and showed us how to dip the almond biscuit in the wine first! There were also ...Read More
