Quick Tips:

Be prepared for a lot to do. San Diego has about the nicest climate year round in the US and has an incredible amount of things to do outdoors. I was overwhelmed the first time I visited, but it only took one time to get me to move there.

Best Way To Get Around:

You need to rent a car. Public transportation is good, but only if you plan for it (such as using it to go to a ballgame or one of the many malls).

Kona's is the best place to eat breakfast in San Diego. The Big Breakfast with the French Toast is my favorite. I am sometimes persuaded to try the breakfast burrito. Whatever you get though, you need to try the potatos with cheese. If you're lucky and it's not too busy, you need to sit across the boardwalk behind the shell shop. The views of the ocean are ok, but it's more just the feeling of being there over the ocean than anything.

Sea World is really a great park to visit. I used to purchase the pass and go several times a year. The shows are pretty good, not nearly as cheesy as when I was a kid. There are tons of interactive shows and attractions. You can pet rays, touch anemones and starfish, or feed the dolphins. There are also the 3D type rides where they try to make it like you're flying in the Arctic. There is a children's area with nets to climb and water pistols to shoot. It's best to get there early and on a weekday if possible. Well worth it if you're going to be in town for at least a week.

Sea Lions

Everyone who visits San Diego for the first time is taken to the Children's Pool in La Jolla to see the Sea Lions. They all just lay there and sun themselves on the beach and on the rocks. Occasionally one will get up and take a swim. There are always tons of people on the walkway above the beach. It wasn't too long ago that you could walk right up them and just hang out, but people have been getting a little pushy with the wildlife lately, so they have now put up barriers. It is still great though to just go and relax, watch all the people walking by and hang out with the real locals.

This is one of my favorite pictures. I took this while flying out of town one summer day. It shows the areas from Mission Beach on the left which turns into Pacific Beach which then turns into La Jolla. There is so much to do just in the Bay that you could spend a week there and still not get to it all. There's windsurfing, waterskiing, kayaking, swimming, jet skiing, sunning, rollerblading, and night life all packed in this little area. It's all within walking distance too if you have a little time. There are some of the best walkways for rollerblading, bike riding, running and walking on both sides of the bay and on the ocean side. Pacific Beach is where a lot of younger people go to live a couple of years and try to figure out what they are going to do with their lives. It is a very dynamic area with a lot of restaurants, clubs, bars and things to do outdoors. You can go to the park at the end of Law Street and gaze out over the city. You can ride a bike along the paths by the beach. I like hanging out at Longboards on Garnet or Cass Street Bar and Grill when I'm in town. The pier is a great place to go to relax.
