Weekend Getaway in Gaithersburg, MD

A June 2006 trip to Maryland by foodallergy

Quote: If you're looking for something off the beaten path, Gaithersburg is the perfect place. On the outskirts of Washington, DC, it has some wonderful little-known activities for kids off all ages. So go ahead and stay a little outside of DC, and enjoy the suburban nightlife!

Weekend Getaway in Gaithersburg, MD

Overview

Quote:
This was a very interesting trip, because the area is currently flooded to the hilt. Of course, the weather reports make it sound much worse than it is, and the weather's been pretty sunny.

Quick Tips:

We're staying right across the road from great shopping and restaurants. Shopping sites include Lake Forest Mall, Toys R Us, Sam's Club, etc.

Best Way To Get Around:

We're right across the street from the access to 270 (which brings you right to the Capital Beltway). There's also great taxi service, car rental (some places pick you right up), and Metro Bus Service.

Ruby Tuesday (Lake Forest Mall)

Restaurant | "Ruby Tuesday's in Lake Forest Mall"

Quote:
Like all Ruby Tuesdays, this was a nice dining experience. The atmosphere was nice, with dimmed lighting and custom decorating. The burgers are incredible—they claim to be a custom-made recipe, and I imagine it's true. However, they are huge. The salad bar is very nice, it's a big spread, but not as big as other Ruby Tuesdays that I've seen.

Sakura Japanese Steak & Seafood House

Restaurant | "Sakura Restaurant"

Quote:
As soon as you walk in the door, you'll feel like you've stepped into a brand new world. Sizzling teriyaki fillets, fresh luscious lobster, and golden chicken greet you with their soft smoky aromas. You'll be sitting at "tables" of 8—and might make some new friends, as your personal chefs prepare your meal right before your eyes. These talented chefs mix excellent grilling skills with small bits of humor to make this an excellent affordable experience.

O' Malley's Pub

Attraction | "O'Malley's Pub"

Quote:
It's a nice little sports bar. I recommend it for people who stay in the hotel (Holiday Inn, Gaithersburg, MD), but I wouldn't go out of my way to go visit. Very boisterous, crowded, great TVs, and decent seating.

Miniature Golf Course at Bohrer Park

Attraction | "Miniature Golf At Bohrer Park"

Quote:
This incredible course is much more than a miniature golf course—it's a relaxing setting, showing off beautiful hills, breathtaking waterfalls, gentle streams and ponds, and small wooden bridges The course itself is designed to feel somewhere between a "real" golf course and a little piece of a national park. In addition to the beautiful course, this small park-like setting has wonderful covered park benches, so you can have your own picnic right there in the middle of everything. You could also pop next door to visit the batting cages or the incredible outdoor pool. As an added benefit, Bohrer Park is centrally located on a main highway. This makes it very easy to find...Read More

Lakeforest Mall

Hotel | "The Froggy Pond -- a great adventure for kids"

Quote:
Oh, my! If you have a young child, you can't miss this wonderful adventure. This free indoor playground is the hidden secret of Gaithersburg, and people travel from all around to enjoy a fun morning at the Froggy Pond. There's hardly words to describe it, but I'll give it a try!! This well-padded, safe playground is designed to look like a life-sized Game of Life. Each brightly colored square is soft and padded, and the little kids love to crawl or walk around the "board". In the middle of their trek, they are greeted by wonderful fun activities, like footstool-sized mushrooms and frogs playing leapfrog (all made of the same soft material). The kids just can't wait to climb under, over, ...Read More
