Of course when one goes to Athens, the first place they're going to seek out is the Acropolis! It is absolutely amazing to be there and if you can, you definitely want to go more than once. The best time to go is as early and late as you can go. That's when the top is the clearest of tourists and you can get the best possible pictures. I recommend bringing a small bag for your stuff, because they will make you put any backpack or similar bigger bag into a storage place. It is extremely windy on top and you might want a jacket despite how hot it can get in Greece. Again, you're going to want sturdy shoes to climb up to see the monuments. Now, what most people don't realize is that the Ac...Read More

When I started out on this whole journey, I honestly did not think I would end up in Athens. It just seemed (and still seems) extremely surreal to me. It's very insane to me that I accomplished going to a place that was always a "oh one day" place. You know the kind, "oh, one day I'll visit this list of places" and you never actually do. Or you're too old to enjoy living in crappy hostels and rooming with people you've never met. As a history major (and a person who was obsessed with the Greek gods when I was younger—no I don't know why), I figured I'd just end up in England and travel all over to these places. That was how it was going to go, too, until one of the professors shoved this catalog u...Read More

Kolonaki Platea (or Kolonaki Square) is the main "ritzy" square up by Lykavittos hill. Here is where you will find the Gucci and Prada stores as well as many nice cafes and tavernas. The Greeks who live here are mostly wealthy compared to the rest of the main part of Athens. They speak English and French (as well as Greek, of course), but a lot of the time they are pretty snooty when it comes to tourists. But the square is very nice to relax in and the shops are pretty amazing when it comes to things to buy!One note about Kolonaki and Greece in general: The city and country is ancient, thus the plumbing is ancient as well. You will not be able to flush your toilet paper in many parts of...Read More

A few things about visiting Athens:-You will definitely want to get Euros before you go. While there are ample opportunities to use ATMs and banks all over the city, the conversion rate and extra charges incurred by you could waste more money than you planned. If you are going to be staying there for an extended period of time (such as I did), you definitely want to find the corresponding bank over there. Be prepared to not be able to do that, as they only have 2 or 3 banks that are internationally affiliated.-Bring an umbrella if you are visiting during the fall. It is the rainy season and boy does it rain! Off and on for a couple of months, so it will definitely be an advent...Read More

If you like the Mediterranean style of cooking, be prepared to have your tastebuds to light up! Greek food in Athens is everywhere, in every form you could think of. From cheap fast food to gourmet delights, Greece has amazing food. As far as fast food goes, there are McDonald's in Athens. Do not fear, the West has gained somewhat of a threshold! But for every McD's, there is a Goody's and an Everest just around the corner. And those, are far superior to even our standards. Goody's is a typical hamburger joint with pasta dishes on the menu as well. Their hamburgers are amazing and cheap! Everest is exactly what America needs in terms of fast grab-n-go food. They have spanikopita, tiropi...Read More
