Québec à la Carte

A March 2006 trip to Quebec City by Vaugirard

Five days in Quebec leave me wanting more... a beautiful spot, even on the shoulder season.

This bustling café is a Canadian chain which is well worth a detour. It will probably become your favorite breakfast spot!

L'Oeuforie boasts an extraordinary number of dishes all based upon the egg ("un oeuf" in French). Euphoric? You bet! The menu ranges from the classics (bacon and—you guessed it—eggs) to the fancy (eggs benedict in any number of combinations, including a vegetarian version) to the exotic (french toast made with a chocolate croissant) to the super healthy (yogurt). Be sure to order something with a "fruit avalanche." The beautiful presentation of a myriad of fruits (I counted over a dozen at my first meal) is an architectural wonder with a cascade of kiwis, strawberries, mango, papaya...and a couple of things I didn't recognize (but really enjoyed).

The lunch menu includes a pasta bar with a variety of pastas and sauces, as well as a selection of burgers and steaks. The evening (or "souper") delights with Asian dishes, fresh soups and salads, and more burgers and steaks.

I went by myself the first day then told others in my group. By the end of the week, we were all eating regularly at L'Oeuforie.

There appears to be quite a few business people who join colleagues for breakfast and breakfast meetings so the restaurant can be crowded (and noisy). Consider it a time to eavesdrop and work on your French.
