It was our 5th day of travel in Ireland and we had already been through Counties Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow, Carlow, Kilkenny, and Tipperary. Day 5 found us leaving Birr, County Tipperary and heading for County Mayo through Roscommon. We were very excited because we were going to be in the west of Ireland that night. It surprised us on how much mileage we were getting with the longer days of late spring. Mayo is a county with a varied landscape, scenic panoramas, natural amenities, a rich archaeological, historical, and sporting heritage, which is of interest to the geologist, the botanist, the archaeologist, the historian, the angler, the mountain climber, the sporting enthusiast, th...Read More

When we saw Healy's listed on the Ireland website for a unique place to stay in County Mayo, we were so happy to find just what we wanted for a lake centered environment. It was perfect, and we had such a great time. We loved the view of the lake, the rush weeds that lined the water around the bankings, the play of the sun as it settled over the water. So peaceful and relaxing, especially after our busy day of traveling from Tipperary, through Roscommon and finally to County Mayo on Lough Cullin. Pontoon is situated in between two lakes on Route R310 off R318 which is off N26 which is off of N5. We are partial to fine dining and we were so happy with the elegant dining room in spite of the Fis...Read More

We had heard so much about this Hotel from friends who had visited there and how much they loved it, and the authentic antiques and decorative qualities. It was just as they said, we were surrounded in an environment of fine luxurious living and dining. The antiques were exquisite and the room was beyond our imagination. Fabulous canopied bed and the bathroom was wonderful also. Speaking with the mistress of the house who oversaw the clientele, she made us to believe that keeping up this grand old hotel house was becoming more and more difficult. Its upkeep and all was tremendous work. I do so hope that it will remain available to those who are seeking the best of the best. The grounds ...Read More

I just have to share more of the photographs of the Newport House, there is no way to give it credit due with only four photos. Below is a link to where you can find a description of one of the many great 6.5 mile walks from this area. Hope you are interested in visiting this wonderful place.

As we headed for Achill Island from Foxford with our next lodging at the Newport House near Clew Bay in mind, we happened to go by the National Museum of Ireland near Castlebar just by chance as we were going down N5. We just had to stop being that museums are something that we never miss if we cannot help it. Traveling in Mayo was a moment-to-moment discovery and we never seemed to know what else would lie around the next corner. "The National Museum of Ireland - Country Life is home to the Irish Folklife Division. This Division is responsible for the care of the National Folklife Collection which comprises of over 50,000 objects. These collections reflect Irish traditional life, largely of...Read More

Many years ago back in 1996 in early spring, Achill Island is the first place we stayed at on our first day ever in Ireland. First day off the plane, we (myself and two friends) just drove and drove and drove, until we had to stop because it was dark. We had no reservations, it was late, and we were exhausted. We found ourselves on beautiful Achill Island. We stayed at the Wild Haven Hostel on Achill Sound. The owner of the hostel led us in through a wonderful glass kitchen and into a great cozy lounge with an open turf fire. He told us we could stay in the bunk room and he would loan us some blankets and pillows (you have to provide your own bedding in a hostel, usually a sleeping bag). It was primit...Read More

I always have to go back to this magical place, it's raw, rugged, barren beauty is one of my favorite's in all of Ireland. I think I had a spiritual experience here. After driving in the car for hours and hours and getting out of the car to experience the wild wind and roaring waves of the sea crashing on the jagged rocks was very dramatic, and I will never forget how that made me feel. One of my most memorable experiences on Achill Island was coming across a deserted farmhouse and outbuilding on a hill overlooking the sea, I just wanted to unpack the car and stay there for the rest of my life. Off in the distance was a sheep herder and his dog. His herd of sheep was nearby. I thought I was ...Read More
