Erie and North East, PA

A May 2006 trip to Erie by tszklen

Quote: Trip to Erie and North East, Pennsylvania, including grape country, wineries, public dock. Toured wineries on the Chautauqua—Lake Erie wine trail. Saw a nice sunset on Freeport beach.

Smugglers Wharf

Restaurant | "Smuggler's Wharf"

Located right on the bay by the public dock, Smuggler's Cove has been a favorite local hangout for years. We especially enjoy the seafood, even though the menu covers everything from steaks to chicken. The last visit I had the lake perch—it was tasty and so tender that it dissolved in my mouth. Try the locally brewed Mad Anthony Ale. The atmosphere is relaxed, with a great view of the bay. They have all-you-can eat nights as well.

Freeport Restaurant

Had lunch at the Freeport restaurant. A local hangout for years, it has a bar as well as restaurant section. Food is good, service was good and very reasonable. Be sure to go down to Freeport Beach (just behind the restaurant) for an after meal stroll.

Located on East Lake Road (Route 5) in North East. Nice winery with a broad variety of wines. Several are award-winning. We tried them all and liked the Reflections white. This is the closest winery to Erie. They have a large tasting room and tours are available by appointment.
