Mewar Haveli is right on the lake in the Lal Ghat area near the City Palace. Easy walking distance to pretty much anything you'll want to see. With nine rooms, all but three have lake views. The restaurant is very pretty, with painted walls and two padded window seat tables, looking out at the Lake Palace, where you can see fireworks at night. Above the main restaurant is a rooftop terrace (completely open air) with great views. I believe you can be served food on the terrace as well. The food is nothing spectacular (your standard variety of grilled cheese, Indian dishes, "continental" dishes), but the hot chocolate is excellent.

On the ground floor, attached to the hotel, is an Internet cafe and bookstore. It's well stocked with candy, snacks, drinks, and travel books. They can also arrange cars for you, reserve tickets, help you with travel arrangements. They are extremely friendly and helpful, so don't hesitate to ask if you need some help with your travel arrangements. Internet time is about 30Rs per hour. They don't let you upload pictures yourself (an issue with bandwidth, I was told), but they can burn them to a CD for you for a small fee.

The rooms are hand-painted. Ours had a ceiling fan and a padded window seat along scalloped windows—very pretty. Unfortunately there's no hot water from mid-morning to late afternoon, and often no power at that time as well, though I think that's a city issue, and not specific to this hotel.

The staff is super nice and accommodating. I ended up staying an extra night and they did some juggling so I wouldn't have to switch rooms. I talked with the waiters at dinner and they were always very curious and friendly.

Laundry service is available, morning pick-up and afternoon drop-off. Credit cards are accepted for room payment and the hotel has an elevator, if you're on the upper floors and have heavy luggage or are just lazy. Rooms run from 1100 to 1500, depending on the size and what website you reserve them through. Rajasthaninfo.org had cheaper rates than other sites I looked for the hotel on. Read Less
